Matt McIlwain

Matt McIlwain is an American businessman, managing partner and director of the venture capital firm Madrona Venture Group.

Early life[edit]

McIlwain was educated at Dartmouth where he received a B.A. in Government and Economics in 1987[1]. He later went on to receive a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School in 1992.

Career[edit]

Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was Vice President of Business Process for the Genuine Parts Company. He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing in technology-driven sectors and prior to that worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse[2].

In addition to his work at Madrona, McIlwain is chair of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center board of trustees[3]. He is also on the board for the Washington Policy Center[4], the Be Greater Foundation[5], and founded the non-profit Opportunity for All Coalition in 2017 to challenge a proposed Seattle income tax in court[6]. He serves as a director on several boards, including Mixpo, Animoto, and Smartsheet[1].

Awards[edit]

McIlwain was listed on the Forbes’ Midas List as one of the tech’s top investors[7][8] and named to the list of top 100 Venture Capitalists by CB Insights[9] and The New York Times. In 2011 he received the Washington Policy Center’s Champion of Freedom Award[10] and in 2017 he received the Puget Sound’s Business Journal’s Emerging Company Director of the year award.[11]
