Matthew Fergusson-Stewart is an Australian based in Singapore. He is the managing director of Spun Spirits Pte Ltd[1][2][3][4]. He is named Icons of Whisky - Rest of World, Scotch Whisky Brand Ambassador of the Year, 2017[5][6][7][8][9][10][11].

He is also the recipient of the Best Education and Community Ambassador by The Bar Awards in 2018 for his contributions to the local bar industry and whisky community[12]. He is also the co-founder of the online whisky community Dram Full, which now has 22,000 members with nine chapters in Asia Pacific and is still growing[1].

In 2020, Fergusson-Stewart joined hands with Lucaris for its Masters' Choice Collection[13]. Together, they developed the world's first specialised and award-winning crystal glassware for whiskies.[14][15][16][17][18] Marketed as The Gran Collection, the luxury glassware was awarded iF Design Award 2021 for household / tableware category.[19] In the following year, the collection won Tableware Awards of Excellence 2022 for fine glassware category[20].

Early life and education[edit]

Born in 1976 and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Fergusson-Stewart is a descendent of the heroine Grace Bussell[21][22][23]. There are several places named in her honour: Gracetown and Busselton are two of the many examples.[24][25]

The Fergusson-Stewart family is one of the early settlers in Guildford[26], Western Australia. Dr James Edmund Fergusson-Stewart[27][28] is Fergusson-Stewart's great grand-father. He married Enid Drake-Brockman[29], daughter of Grace Bussell and Surveyor-General Frederick Drake-Brockman.[30][31] Enid was a founding student of Guildford Grammar School.[32]

Fergusson-Stewart's elder sister, Anna, attended the opening of the co-ed Preparatory School at Guildford Grammar School with their great grand-mother Enid Fergusson-Stewart (nee Drake-Brockman) in 1976. Both the Fergusson-Stewart and his sister studied at Guildford Grammar School.[32] This makes Fergusson-Stewart the fourth generation of his family to be enrolled in the school.

At age 17, Fergusson-Stewart spent a year in Thailand on an exchange program. After Thailand, he studied chemistry at the University of Western Australia. Two years later, he transferred to Edith Cowan University, where he double majored in both Marketing and International Business, eventually graduated with First Class Honours in Management.[9]

He had his first taste of single malt scotch whisky after a celebratory dinner on the eve of his graduation.[33] He described it as "a revelation," and reported that it set him on the path towards his eventual career.[7]

Career[edit]

After graduating from university, Fergusson-Stewart went to work for US defense contractor Raytheon in 2002, in marketing and later moving into business development. In 2005, he joined Capitalis as a consultant, same time which he joined the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS). In 2008, Fergusson-Stewart moved on and took up the Manager of Insights and Analysis position with the Government Employees Superannuation Board.[9]

Fergusson-Stewart's entry to the whisky industry really started when he secured the state manager for Western Australia chapter of SMWS. There, the Society’s chapter in Perth grew from ten to approximately two hundred members.[11]

In 2010, Fergusson-Stewart moved to Singapore and founded Stewart's Whisky Consultancy.[34] The move allowed him to be more exposed to opportunities surrounding whisky. It also allowed him to work on projects[35] such as Whiskylive Singapore[36]. In 2012, Fergusson-Stewart took a full-time job as The Auld Alliance's operations manager.[37][38]

In mid-2013, Fergusson-Stewart joined William Grant & Sons as Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador[39] for Southeast Asia.[40][41] He was promoted as the Asia Pacific regional brand ambassador in 2016[42][43][44]. While at the company, he co-founded the online whisky community Dram Full, which now 22,000 members with nine chapters in Asia Pacific and is still growing.[9]

During his time at William Grants & Sons, he received the honour of being named Icons of Whisky - Rest of World, Scotch Whisky Brand Ambassador of the Year, 2017[5]. In 2018, he received Best Education and Community Ambassador by The Bar Awards in 2018 for his contributions to the local bar industry and whisky community[12].

After slightly over 5 years with William Grants & Sons, Fergusson-Stewart joined The Whisky Store, owned by TSH Corporation Limited on SGX Catalist, as the Chief Marketing Officer in Q4 2018[45][46][47] In April 2020, Fergusson-Stewart was asked to leave by the Chief Executive Officer on the day the COVID19 lockdown[48] was announced by the Singapore government[49].

After being retrenched by The Whisky Store, Fergusson-Stewart continues his work in whisky. Beam Suntory Asia engaged Fergusson-Stewart as their Regional Brand Ambassador, specialising in the advocacy of malt whiskies, focusing primarily on Auchentoshan and Bowmore in the second half of 2020. He was involved in the launch of the Bowmore and Aston Martin series[50] among other whisky related education and activations.

In August 2020, Fergusson-Stewart co-founded Spun Spirits Pte Ltd.[51][52] Expanding beyond single malts, Fergusson-Stewart steers the company as the Managing Director. Despite repeated lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions, the company secured distributorship of brands such as El Dorado, Baldoria, Procera, Nadar, Equiano, Arbikie, Tanglin Gin and Tiki Lovers[53].

Fergusson-Stewart's collaboration with Lucaris Crystal saw the launch of The Gran Collection, the world's first specialised crystal glassware for whiskies in 2020[13][14][15][16][17][18]. The luxury glassware won iF Design Award 2021[19] and Tableware Awards of Excellence 2022[20].

In 2020, Fergusson-Stewart launched his eponymous blog to share his thoughts and journey in spirits particularly single malt whisky.

Research & Writings[edit]

In 2011 and 2012, Matthew published two research articles "Chill Filtration and Cloud Formation in Whisky" and "The Taste of Chill Filtration" in Malt Maniacs. These articles have been referenced in other notable publications[54][55][56]. His interest in physics, mathematics and chemistry has also led him to set up and share his these aspects of whisky in a facebook group called Whisky Molecules.
