May Charlez (born Ebubedike Ebuka Charles 16 May 1995) is a Nigerian 'Banku' Afrobeat singer songwriter. Originally from Ozubulu, Anambra state, Nigeria, the oldest of six siblings. Best known for his individual work but also with D’Blaze and Xpsilver D'Blaze and Xpsilver Banku Collaboration, his career has included performing with several Authentic African Nigerian Ghanaian artists. In July 2014, May Charlez goes solo and produces his first solo,[1] following a successful collaboration with D'Blaze and Xpsilver with a mix produced in Nigeria, MAMA produced by mackprobeatz. May Charlez emulates the style and Banku genre first introduced by Mr. Eazi.[2]

Back Story[edit]

Charlez from a poor family in Abuja, relocated to Lagos in 2003. He built tin toy aeroplanes and cars to sell. A neighbour who was a French teacher, saw May's potential, suggested he attend college where his talent for music and dance shone out. To support his family, he worked at the local market, following graduation, to fund his siblings' education he relocated to Togo. With lunch money he bought books to study French but continued to sing and perform. After a succession of jobs, in selling shoes, film production and computers, he travelled to Seoul to fund his music career as a migrant worker on night shifts for a glazing company which did not stymie his output. Far from denting ambition May cut his first title in a South Korean studio, 'Only You' launched in digital format. Hard-earned cash funded a Nigerian producer to master the title for a shoestring $240. Charlez has produced several titles, including. 'Forever Together' (2015) with D-Blaze & Xpsilver. May Charlez has worked in extenuating circumstances which has caused his loss of job due to being part of an ethnic minority workforce.

Banku Sound May Charlez's 'Banku' is a unique sound, a style first attributed to Mr. Eazi, a UK pioneer. But May Charlez forms a second wave, with refined dance, R&B rap and reggae influences, characterised by raw African Banku content, contrasting romantic lyrics which sentimentalises the product, expressing love, being cast away, and of life experiences. Few Afrobeat artists are writing similar lyrics which widens his appeal. Charlez is a true globetrotter who can perform 'live' anywhere. The UK is an undeveloped market. May Charlez has pedigree, mentored by P Square, a successful Nigerian R&B set-up. Authentic, niche sound Banku, an offshoot of Afrobeat blending dance, R&B, global pop, and hip-hop a West African pop genre fused with sounds signifying African highlife with typical Nigerian chord progressions and patterns; The music moves into Reggae R&B and Rap territory to appeal to a larger market operating in a dance and DJ environment. May Charlez creates authentic Black African music which is now being taken seriously by the industry with collaboration potential with black homegrown artists.
