"Maybe You're Right" is a song by American recording artist Miley Cyrus for her fourth studio album Bangerz (2013). It was written by Cyrus, Michael L. Williams II, Pierre Ramon Slaughter, Camaron Ochs, John Shanks and Tyler Sam Johnson. Its production was helmed by Mike Will Made It and P-Nasty. Lyrically, "Maybe You're Right" can be interpreted as "an autobiographical glimpse inside Cyrus' dynamic with her ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth". Cyrus sings lyrics like "You might think I'm crazy… Maybe you're right," strides forward and unapologetically belts, "This chapter's done."[1]
"Maybe You're Right" received positive reviews from contemporary music critics. Cyrus' vocal performance was lauded and compared to P!nk, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.[2] Cyrus has performed the song during her ongoing Bangerz Tour.
Background and composition[edit]
In 2012, Cyrus announced plans to focus on her film career, effectively putting her musical endeavors on hiatus. That year, she appeared in the films LOL and So Undercover. She was also confirmed as a primary voice actress in the feature film Hotel Transylvania, but dropped out of the project to coordinate a musical comeback.[3] In January 2013, Cyrus ended her recording contract with Hollywood Records, under which she released the albums Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus (2007), Breakout (2008), Can't Be Tamed (2010), and EP The Time of Our Lives (2009). Later that month, she signed a recording contract with RCA Records.[4] In March, she confirmed that her fourth studio album would be released by the end of 2013.[5] The final product, Bangerz, was released in October 2013 and debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 270,000 copies.[6]
"Maybe You're Right" was written by Cyrus, Michael L. Williams II, Pierre Ramon Slaughter, Camaron Ochs, John Shanks and Tyler Sam Johnson. It was produced by Mike Will Made It with co-production by P-Nasty, and engineered by Chris "Tek" O'Ryan. Stephen Hybicki and Tim Roberts recorded the song with assistants Mike Gaydusek, Eva Reistad and Jon Garrett. It was later mixed by Jaycen Joshua with assistance from Ryan Kaul.[7] According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Kobalt Music Publishing America, the track is written in the key of Ab major with a tempo of 120 beats per minute.[8] Lyrically, it's a break-up anthem. Shardae Jobson of The Turn Magazine called it "dramatic" and stated that the title alone made her wonder, "What are they possibly right about?" She further opined that Cyrus is referring to her "elders, critics and whomever that has judged her and thinks she’s crazy, lost or foolish."[2] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard described the song as containing "walloping drums" and "hints of gospel influence". He further stated that the song is guided by a "far-off chorus of whoa-oh-oh's" as Cyrus relates her "deteriorating romance to the chapters of a book she knows all too well",[1] while Mikael Wood from the Los Angeles Times called it "piano-laced" and opined that Cyrus answered her critics directly in this song through the line "You might think I'm crazy... maybe you're right".[9] Duncan Cooper of The Fader opined that the production loops on the song were "really loopy—the rock guitar and simple piano bits start abruptly and do the same thing 16 times then turn off—making the song seen extra-formulaic. It's colored so neatly within the lines of generic pop that it calls attention to the lines. In this context— particularly after hearing it once all the way through, ending on the studio-talk "Let me go to the top one more time," a double-meaning for the recording process and heights of adoration."[10]
Critical reception[edit]
"Maybe You're Right" received generally favorable reviews from contemporary music critics. Heather Phares of AllMusic provided a favorable review, calling it a "brassy empowerment jam which sells Cyrus as an independent woman", along with "FU" and "Do My Thang"[11] Mariah Eakin from The A.V. Club likened the track to the works of P!nk and Kelly Clarkson.[12] Kyle Fowle from Slant Magazine commented that the "rote" track finds "Cyrus genre-hopping without any clear focus".[13] Shardae Jobson from The Turn Magazine provided a positive review, and compared Cyrus' vocals to Carrie Underwood.[2] Writing for PopMatters, Evan Sawdey described "Maybe You're Right" as "a solid John Shanks co-write with a big anthemic chorus and one of Cyrus’ more engaged performances, here unlocking a higher vocal register that we haven’t heard from her before and that will serve her well in the future".[14]
Writing for MTV, John Walker reviewed the song positively, writing, "After all the DGAF partying and FU breakups, the unexpectedly nuanced lyrics are a welcome addition to the album." He further termed Cyrus' willingess to acknowledge her flaws "inspiring".[15] Christina Drill of "Popdust" rated it 5/5 and called it a "sweeping ballad that could be a single". She compared the track to Kelly Clarkson and praised Cyrus' vocal performance, writing, "Cyrus’ voice stretches up towards heaven in the chorus and the result is a pretty power ballad about leaving love behind". She further stated that it was going to be a karaoke staple in five years.[16] Writing for Fact, Tom Lea provided the song a positive review, calling it a "wind tunnel hyperballad."[17] Duncan Cooper of The Fader praised the song, writing, "Miley's singing seems to address both a personal romance and her position as a pop singer: Chapter one, we started happy (Hannah Montana-era Disney bliss), Trying to figure out chapter three (what comes next after wild-and-crazy, early-20s Miley), Maybe you're right, might think I'm crazy/ That I'm lost and foolish (addressing critics of her persona), and so on. That reading kinda works, makes things interesting."[10]
Live performances[edit]
Cyrus has performed "Maybe You're Right" on her ongoing Bangerz Tour.[18] Her performance received positive reviews from critics. During the first leg of the tour, she wore a green "Crystal Mary Jane bodysuit" designed by "The Blonds", during the performance of the song. It was covered in 3D sequin marijuana leaves with a gold chain necklace and a giant gold marijuana-shaped medallion.[19] Designer Philippe Blond of "The Blonds" said that the look was inspired by Madonna and stated that- "Miley is fearless! We love how she's expressed herself in such an iconic and visual way."[20] During the second leg of the tour, she wore a green leotard designed by The Blonds which was covered with dollar bills that featured Cyrus' face.[21] [22] Jane Stevenson of the Toronto Sun provided a positive review for the performance and specifically praised Cyrus' vocals.[23]
