Mboka Mwilambwe is a Congolese-American politician. Mwilambwe was elected Mayor of Bloomington, Illinois in 2021 and is currently the Mayor-Elect of Bloomington, Illinois.[1]
Personal life
Mwilambwe was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Mwilambwe moved to the United States to get a college education. He enrolled at Illinois State University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.[2]
Political career
Mwilambwe was first appointed to the City Council of Bloomington, Illinois in March 2011 to serve out the term of the previous Alderman. Mwilambwe was then elected to the position in 2013 and re-elected in 2017.[2] On April 6, 2021, Mwilambwe won the 2021 Bloomington, Illinois Mayoral Election with 38.7% of the vote defeating Mike Straza who came in at second place, by 1.8%.[3] Mwilambwe was elected the first Black Mayor of Bloomington, Illinois.[4]
