Large creatures in deep water, such as this megalodon, are classic examples of Megalohydrothalassophobia.

Megalohydrothalassophobia is the fear of large creatures or objects in deep waters, such as lakes, deep rivers or the ocean. Although it is very similar, it should not be confused for regular Thalassophobia, which is simply the fear of deep water. Megalohydrothalassophobia can affect people by giving them dry mouths, nausea, or anxiety spikes.

Causes for Megalohydrothalassophobia[edit]

There are no definitive causes for Megalohydrothalassophobia, however some theories suggest that it can be caused by

  • Trauma, such as having had a traumatic experience with deep waters, usually in childhood or youth
  • Inherited fears from parents or role models
  • Fear of the unknown
  • Pop culture influences
  • Evolutionary responses to large bodies of water

People who have Thalassophobia often get triggered which can cause anxiety when swimming in deep or murky water or watching videos, movies or pictures which are taken in deep water.

Aquaphobia is a irrational of persistent fear of bodies of water, such as swimming pools, lakes, rivers, and oceans. A person who suffers from this phobia may feel extremely anxious or have a panic attack when exposed to water or large bodies of water and can often have drowning or overwhelming sensations.

Megalophobia[edit]

Megalophobia is a fear of large objects, such as tall buildings, statues, and other inanimate things. People with Megalophobia will often have panic attacks or a feeling of escape when coming into contact with a large object.
