Mehdi Nassouli (in Arabic: المهدي الناسولي) (born in 1985 in Taroudannt[1]) is a Moroccan musician (vocalist – percussionist) specialized in Malhun and Gnawa music.
Nassouli performed in different festivals across the world, and collaborated with several world-renowned artists including Titi Robin, Ahmed Soultan, Herbie Hancock, Fatoumata Diawara, Nneka, Justin Adams, Hindi Zahra, Andy Emler, Sami Waro, Benjamin Taubkin and Alpha Blondy[2].
Early life[edit]
Mehdi Nassouli was born in Taroudannt in southern Morocco, where he experienced the rhythms and sounds of traditional Moroccan culture while growing up. This inspired him to dedicate his life to studying instruments and the voice of his people. He immersed himself in the rhythms and spiritual trance of “Gnawa” music practised by his ancestors. At the same time, he practiced Malhun poetic arts and deqqa, a traditional form of art from Taroudant and spent the better part of his childhood learning several traditional musical styles[3]. Before embarking on his international career, Nassouli spent a decade criss-crossing Morocco, studying the diverse regional musical disciplines under some of the leading exponents of guembi[4].
After shaping his musical knowledge, Nassouli started to fuse traditional North African style with jazz and other world styles in his own band and through his different collaborations.
