Mehmed-aga Fočić[1]was one of four most powerful men in Serbia who commanded the janissaries. [2] The other three were Kučuk Alija Đevrlić, Mula Jusuf and Aganlija, but all four with Mehmed-aga Fočić, were responsible for the Slaughter of the Knezes that precipitated the Serbian Revolution[3]. During the First Serbian Uprising Serbian balladeers with their gusle praised Karađorđe who led an insurrection against the Ottoman Empire as well as the heroic deeds of the other revolutionaries with him who bravely fought, though outnumbered by the Turks and their superior arms[4]. These original songs were later incorporated into Serbian literature.
