The Melbourne Derby is an intra-city local rivalry in Australia's premier Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League. It is contested between the Melbourne Renegades and the Melbourne Stars. It is one of two cross-city derbies in the league, the other being between Sydney teams the Thunder and the Sixers.[1]
Creation[edit]
In 2005, Cricket Australia founded a Twenty20 cricket competition to be played between each of the six first-class cricketing states in the country. The Victorian Bushrangers were instantly successful, winning the first tournament before going on to win three more.
At the end of the 2010-11 tournament, Cricket Australia launched a new tournament to try and capitalise on the success of Twenty20 cricket with a much broader audience. Each of the six states would have at least one team but Melbourne and Sydney would each field two sides.
This led to the creation of the Melbourne Stars, who would wear green and play out of the traditional home of Australian cricket the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the Melbourne Renegades who wear red and play at the non-traditional cricket venue of Etihad Stadium at Melbourne's Docklands.
History[edit]
The first Melbourne Derby was played at the MCG on 7 January 2012. 40,227 fans turned up to watch the match, the second-largest crowd in Australian domestic cricket history.[citation needed] The Stars were sent in to bat first and finished with a total of 5/167 from their 20 overs. The Renegades the started their innings but it was interrupted by rain after just 8.1 overs with the away side 3/58. The rain didn't stop in time for the Renegades to finish their innings and so the match was decided under the Duckworth-Lewis method. The Stars would win by 11 runs.
In the first off-season, the rivalry intensified with two of the Renegades star players Glenn Maxwell and Brad Hodge crossing town to join the Stars. The tournaments organisers added one more game to the schedule for each side, allowing for two intra-city rivalries a season. The 2012-13 season was to open with the first match between the Renegades and Stars at Etihad Stadium.
23,589 spectators turned up on a sunny Friday Night to watch the teams battle it out for the second time. The Stars would once again bat first, setting a modest total of 5/167 headlined by Luke Wright's score of 53. In reply, the Renegades chased down the total with 2/168 to win by eight wickets. Renegades captain Aaron Finch was man of the match with 111 runs not out.
Going into the third derby overall, the Melbourne Renegades were atop the Big Bash League table, having only lost one match to Perth, while the Melbourne Stars were sitting fourth, having previously been first, and were seeking revenge at their home ground, the MCG. The Stars won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a total of 9/146. The Renegades started their chase well and only lost one wicket, that of Alex Doolan and got the total within the 20 overs, Aaron Finch top scoring again with 67 runs not out.
Controversy[edit]
In the third derby, Melbourne Stars captain Shane Warne and Renegades batsman Marlon Samuels were involved in a minor scuffle on the field. Warne initially swore at Samuels, which was repeated to a national audience on TV via Fox Sports and repeatedly gestured towards him. Warne also grabbed Samuels' shirt in retaliation to an incident in the first innings, where Samuels the then bowler tugged at batsman David Hussey's shirt to stop him from attempting a second run. Warne later threw the ball at Samuels after he had defended a ball, causing Samuels to throw his bat, causing uproar on the field.
Eventually the umpires regained control and the match continued. Samuels later retired hurt due to a broken eye socket caused by a Lasith Malinga bouncer, which led him to sit out of the remainder of the Big Bash season. Warne was fined $4000 for the incident and suspended for one match.
