Early life[edit]
Crispell was born in Charlotte, North Carolina to Gospel musician Melvin Crispell (d. 2014) and Gospel singer Tunesha Crispell (d. 2016). He started singing as young as two.[1]
Career[edit]
In 2019, Crispell appeared as a finalist (alongside Joshua Copeland from Maryland) on the ninth season of the BET singing competition television show Sunday Best.[4] In the finale, Crispell performed the song "Not the End of Your Story" which became his debut single.[2] He won the finals and later earned $50,000, which lead him to signing with RCA Inspiration.[2][1] He released his debut EP, Prologue III, on September 20, 2019.[5]
On July 17, 2020, Crispell released the lead single "Wonderful Is Your Name" from his debut album. Crispell's father was the initial writer and composer of the song.[6][1] On September 4, 2020, he released his debut album I've Got a Testimony, which peaked at number five on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart.[5][7]
In March 2021, "Wonderful Is Your Name" received a nomination for Best Gospel Performance/Song at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards and debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Hot Gospel Songs chart.[8] In August 2021, the song topped the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart.[9]
