Merrill Gay is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who serves on the New Britain Board of Education. A candidate for Mayor of New Britain, he was appointed to the Board in 2014 and subsequently won the election in 2015.[1]
Education[edit]
Gay received his BA in Government from Clark University and his master's from New Hampshire College, now Southern New Hampshire University.
Early career and Board of Education[edit]
Gay became the executive director of the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance in 2013 after having served in the same role at the Coalition for New Britain's Children.[2] He was appointed to a vacant seat on the school board on March 26 of the next year before being elected to a four-year term in 2015.[3]
Gay is the treasurer of the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding[4] and was a plaintiff in the landmark Connecticut case CCJEF v. Rell, in which the state's education funding formula was found unconstitutional. [5][6]
2017 mayoral race[edit]
On February 28, 2017, Gay announced that he had formed an exploratory committee to begin raising money and then declared his candidacy for mayor on April 24.[7][8]
He is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination to face incumbent Republican Erin Stewart and was endorsed by U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty and Connecticut's two senators in June.[9][10][11] The New Britain Democratic Party unanimously endorsed Gay for its nomination at a meeting of the Democratic Town Committee on July 20.[12][13] Elections will be held on November 7.[14]

Gay is married to Mary Richardson. Their two children, Vivian and Greg, both attended New Britain High School.
