Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection is a series of upcoming video game compilations developed by Virtuos and published by Konami. These compilations feature remastered ports of games in the Metal Gear franchise of stealth-action games, released in commemoration of the series' 35th anniversary.
Split across volumes, Vol. 1 was announced in May 2023. It will comprise the first five main entries in the franchise: Metal Gear (1987), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004). Metal Gear Solid will be based on its Integral re-release including its standalone set of VR Missions, while Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater will respectively be ported from their 'HD Edition' counterparts previously featured in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (2011), themselves based on the Substance and Subsistence re-releases of MGS2 and MGS3, and featuring the majority of their bonus content.
Vol. 1 will release for PlayStation 5 and other platforms in fall 2023. Future volume releases have been teased and will be announced in the future.
Development
In November 2021, the digital downloads for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as well as the original Metal Gear Solid HD Collection were removed from digital storefronts, with Konami citing the reason as expired licenses. In July 2022, Konami announced their intentions to reinstate the games for the series' 35th anniversary.[1] The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 compilation was announced for PlayStation 5 on May 24, 2023 during Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation Showcase, alongside Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.[2]
In a message from the development team on that same day, they stated their intention for the Master Collection to be 'the most complete collection that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series, allowing fans to play the games as they were, as first released on the latest platforms', teasing at more games and platforms in the future, with 'minimal changes to copyright'.[3]
The compilation was initially revealed to comprise the first three entries in the Solid sub-series: Metal Gear Solid (1998), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001), and the original version of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004).[4] The game's listing on the PlayStation Store additionally detailed that the original Metal Gear Solid would include the additional VR/Special Missions introduced with the Integral re-release on PlayStation and the game's Windows port, while MGS2 and MGS3 were based on their remastered counterparts previously featured in the HD Collection, indirectly confirming the latter two games were based on their Substance and Subsistence re-releases and would include their respective bonus content.[5] The store page also confirmed that as with the original release of Subsistence and the 'HD Edition', Metal Gear Solid 3 on the compilation would also feature the MSX2 games Metal Gear (1987) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990) as extras.[6] Konami confirmed the following day that in addition to providing support on the development of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, external studio Virtuos would help port the games featured in the Master Collection.[7]
