The following is a list of unproduced Michael Mann projects in roughly chronological order. During his long career, American film director Michael Mann has worked on several projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction. Some of these projects fell in "development hell," were officially canceled, were in development limbo or would see life under a different production team.

1990s[edit]

James Dean biopic[edit]

On September 8, 1993, Mann was attached to direct the James Dean biopic with Israel Horovitz writing the script and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star, but Mark Rydell finished the movie for TNT in 2001.[1][2]

The Aviator[edit]

On June 24, 1999, Mann was attached to direct DiCaprio in John Logan’s script “The Aviator,” but Martin Scorsese took over directing the project and Mann stayed as a producer.[3][4]

Gates of Fire[edit]

In late 1999, Mann was attached to direct the film adaptation of Gates of Fire with David Self writing the script.[5]

2000s[edit]

Arms and the Man[edit]

On October 27, 2003, it was reported that Mann was set to direct and produce the film adaptation of Peter Landesman’s article Arms and the Man about Viktor Bout for Universal Pictures, but “Movie Insider” lists it as complete and available on home media, despite the fact that the movie was never made.[6][7]

Fortune’s Fools[edit]

On March 14, 2004, it was reported that Mann was at one point set to direct the crime drama Fortune’s Fools for Working Title Films and Universal Pictures, but moved onto other film and TV projects.[8]

Damage Control[edit]

On July 26, 2006, it was reported that Mann was going to direct the drama Damage Control, with Jamie Foxx was attached to star.[9] On April 7, 2009, it was speculated that Damage Control would start after the release of Public Enemies.[10]

Death of a Dissident film adaptation[edit]

On January 14, 2007, it was reported that Mann is interested in directing the adaptation of Death of a Dissident, the novel about the life and assassination of Alexander Litvinenko for Columbia Pictures, which was in a bidding war against Warner Bros., Graham King and Johnny Depp.[11]

Untitled 1930’s Noir[edit]

On May 2, 2007, it was reported that Mann was going to direct a 1930’s noir film involving Louis B. Mayer with John Logan writing the script and DiCaprio was attached to star, but New Line Cinema cancelled the movie since the estimated $120 million budget proved too expensive and too risky to get made.[12][13][14]

Empire[edit]

On October 10, 2007, it was reported that Mann was going to direct Empire, with John Logan writing the script and Will Smith was attached to play a modern global media mogul.[15]

Frankie Machine[edit]

Waiting for Robert Capa[edit]

On October 4, 2009, Mann had signed on to direct and produce Waiting for Robert Capa, the film adaptation of Susana Fortes’ book about Capa’s two-year romance with Gerda Taro, with Jez Butterworth writing the script.[16] On April 2, 2010, Eva Green revealed that she will star as Taro.[17] In December of that year, Gemma Arterton was casted as Taro and Andrew Garfield was rumored to portray Capa.[18] On December 13, 2012, Arterton revealed in an interview at Marrakech Film Festival that she is starring in Paul Andrew Williams’ Capa biopic instead of Waiting for Robert Capa.[19]

Azincourt[edit]

Big Tuna[edit]

On October 25, 2010, Mann had signed on to direct Big Tuna, a biopic about Sam Giancana replacing Tony Accardo.[20] In December that same year, Sheldon Turner was set to write the script.[21] On March 18, 2016, Mann revealed that he will co-write the script with Don Winslow and will also publish a novelization of the script.[22]

Go Like Hell[edit]

On May 26, 2011, Mann had signed on to direct the film adaptation of A.J. Baime's novel Go Like Hell with Brad Pitt in talks to star in the film.[23] On October 23, 2013, Joseph Kosinski replaced Mann as the film’s director.[24]

Gold[edit]

The Big Stone Grid[edit]

On February 13, 2012, Mann had signed on to direct S. Craig Zahler's spec script The Big Stone Grid.[25] On July 15, 2016, Lotus Entertainment acquired The Big Stone Grid and Pierre Morel replaced Mann as director.[26]

The Tam[edit]

On February 14, 2012, Mann had signed on to direct The Tam, a film set in the South China Sea.[27]

Buda Bridge TV series[edit]

On August 8, 2012, Mann and Mark Johnson were reported to co-produce Michael R. Roskam’s sci-fi crime TV series Buda Bridge for HBO.[28]

Hue 1968 TV miniseries[edit]

On April 24, 2017, Mann and Michael De Luca were reported to co-produce the TV miniseries adaptation of Mark Bowden‘s Hue 1968 for FX.[29]

Comanche biopic[edit]

On October 23, 2017, Mann revealed in an interview that he will direct Comanche, the western biopic of Cynthia Parker.[30]

Untitled sci-fi film[edit]

On October 23, 2017, Mann revealed in an interview that he will direct an untitled sci-fi movie.[30]
