Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3] is an upcoming action-adventure stealth video game developed and published by Konami. It is a remake of the 2004 game Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, originally developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan (KCEJ) as the fifth main installment of the Metal Gear franchise, and as a prequel to the entire series. As with the original game, the narrative is set in 1964, 31 years prior to the events of Metal Gear (1987) and follows a FOX operative codenamed Naked Snake, who must attempt to save a Russian rocket scientist and sabotage the activation of a nuclear-powered superweapon, while absolving his country from the suspicion of the Soviet Union amidst Cold War tensions and confronting his former mentor The Boss, who has defected to their side.

The remake of the game, the second project in the franchise to not involve original creator Hideo Kojima and his studio Kojima Productions, is the first major entry since the release and negative reception of Metal Gear Survive (2018), which marked Konami's initial exit from publishing AAA console games in favor of focusing on their arcade and mobile initiatives. The remake was first reported in October 2021 alongside other projects that were expected to pivot the publisher towards higher-budget titles. The game was officially announced in May 2023. It is being jointly developed internally at Konami with assistance from support studio Virtuos.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is expected to be released in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

Gameplay

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will follow the same gameplay as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The game is of the third-person shooter and Stealth Action genres. The gameplay involves Naked Snake (controlled by the player) moving through an enemy (mainly Russian GRU soldiers) filled environment undetected. Such environments include a jungle, a military fortress, and a mountain. The game is open-ended in that the player can take many different approaches to slip past the enemy. This includes many tools and gadgets, such as a cardboard box, night and heat vision goggles, a fake gavial head and binoculars. Many weapons are also included in the game, ranging from handguns to rocket launchers. Core features include the survival viewer, in which Naked Snake can change uniform and face paint for greater concealment, eat food that is procured via killing animals in-game, curing injuries, and equipping weapons. Another feature is called Close Quarters Combat, or CQC, in which the player can grab, throw, knock-out or kill the enemy. The game will include updated visuals and a new engine from the original Snake Eater.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear franchise, was the original director, co-writer, designer and producer of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004). He left Konami in 2015 following a power struggle with company executives.

The last numbered main entry in the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, was released in September 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim for its varied gameplay, open world design, graphical fidelity and mature themes.[2][3][4] The game's release followed a tumultuous development period, as it progressed in conjunction with an overall restructuring of publisher Konami's operations that would see them altered into a headquarters-controlled system that would help "establish a steadfast operating base capable of responding to the rapid market changes that surround our digital entertainment business".[5] Amidst the restructuring, an anonymous employee of the company relayed through news outlets that these efforts would also see Metal Gear franchise creator and director Hideo Kojima, alongside several senior studio staff members, leaving the company entirely following the lapsing of their respective contracts after the conclusion of The Phantom Pain's development.[6] The exit of Kojima and his team was largely attributed to an ongoing power struggle between himself and Konami's executives, who responded with hostility by depriving his development team of essential resources and demoting them to contractors as opposed to regular company employees.[7] By December 15 that year, Japanese publication Nikkei officially confirmed Kojima's departure from the company and the shuttering of his internal studio Kojima Productions. The company would be reformed as an independent developer almost immediately after its dissolution, soon commencing development on its own original titles beginning with Death Stranding, released in November 2019 as a game developed in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment.[8]

Less than a year following The Phantom Pain's launch and Kojima Productions' closure, Konami unveiled Metal Gear Survive, a spin-off title developed internally at the publisher without the involvement of the aforementioned studio or Kojima himself, and eventually released in February 2018. The game's existence drew a significantly negative response in part due to its association with the controversies surrounding Konami's restructuring and the arduous relationship fostered with Kojima Productions during the final year of The Phantom Pain's development. Ire was particularly directed towards the game's approach to the survival horror genre and themes, and the general departure in tone and structure from previous Metal Gear games.[9][10][11][12] As of 2023, Konami's financial earnings reports have not listed Survive's total sales figures, contrasting both previous Metal Gear games and other titles published by them, with commentators interpreting this as indicative of the game's underperformance relative to Konami's expectations.[13][14]

Following Survive's launch, Konami Digital Entertainment CEO Hideki Hayakawa announced the company's intentions of largely pulling out of investing in the development and publishing of major AAA titles for consoles and PC, in favor of redirecting focus towards mobile gaming and their presence in arcades. Hayakawa remarked on this change in organizational structure as a result of the company's unwillingness to divide their gaming sector into seperate categories between console, PC and mobile, emphasizing that "Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world."[15] This decision was met with widespread backlash from the video gaming industry and community, who collectively derided this shift in corporate strategy for being tone deaf towards the existing player base and fanbase for the various franchises owned by the company that were conceived and popularized on these respective platforms, including Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Castlevania.[16][17][18]

Development

In October 2021, former Video Games Chronicle writer Andy Robinson reported that based on information offered by an anonymous source, Konami was in the process of rejuvenating their presence in the mainstream video game industry by refocusing on their premium game development efforts, including beginning production on multiple new projects in franchises that had been subsequently de-prioritized by the publisher in their transition towards arcade and mobile game ventures. In addition to the report discussing the company's plans to rejuvenate the Silent Hill and Castlevania franchises through the production of new projects outsourced to external development partners, Robinson also detailed Konami's plans to take a similar approach to producing a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), which would be developed by Singaporean art production studio Virtuos.[19] This would be the second remake of a title in the series following Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (2004), a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid (1998) for Nintendo GameCube. Soon after the initial report broke, a user on Twitter shared a finding on the LinkedIn profile of a lead programmer at Virtuos, which listed a "AAA Action-Adventure Remake" as a project in their portfolio which they had been working on since 2018, and described as developed from the ground up for an unspecified 4K-capable platform, adding credence to their association with the reported Snake Eater remake.[20]

Following the game's reveal as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater in May 2023, Konami issued a press statement detailing further information regarding the remake's development philosophy. A spokesperson for the development team described the title as a completely faithful recreation of the original game's story and core design, that would focus on evolving the gameplay by accommodating for "stunning visuals and a seamless user experience."[21] The spokeperson also explained the usage of the Delta symbol (Δ) in the game's titling, remarking that it was meant to honor the symbol's meaning of a "change" or "difference" without changing structure, relating it to the game being a faithful remake of the original Metal Gear Solid 3.[22] Konami separately confirmed on their website that the remake would utilize the game's original voice cast, with entertainment news publication IGN later stating that the game's voiced dialogue would reuse audio from the original release of Snake Eater, as opposed to the actors re-recording their roles.[21][23] Konami revealed the following day that the remake was a co-production between the internal development team at Konami Digital Entertainment (KDE) responsible for previous Metal Gear games, and Virtuos as a support studio, in addition to the latter helping port the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection games to modern platforms.[24] A spokesperson for Konami elaborated in a separate interview conducted by IGN Japan, that the decision to remake Snake Eater over other Metal Gear titles was due to its nature as an origin story for the franchise, that depicted the character of Big Boss in his formative years. Furthermore, they detailed their choice to remaster the game's original audio for the voice performances as opposed to having the actors reprise their roles, largely due to the respective deaths of the Japanese seiyuus for the characters Donald Anderson / Sigint (Keiji Fujiwara; died in 2020), Colonel Volgin (Kenji Utsumi; died in 2013), Aleksandr Granin (Takeshi Aono; died in 2012), The Fear (Kazumi Tanaka; died in 2007), and the fictionalized President Lyndon B. Johnson (Shinji Nakae; died in 2007). Konami additionally confirmed that neither Hideo Kojima or original artist Yoji Shinkawa were involved in the remake, but that the goal of the development team was to produce a faithful adaptation of the original story, clarifying that there would be no new additions on top of the existing narrative.[25]

Marketing and release

The game was officially announced for PlayStation 5 on May 24, 2023 during Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation Showcase alongside the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 compilation comprising the first five installments of the Metal Gear series, including the original version of Snake Eater. Following the presentation, the title was confirmed to also be releasing on Xbox Series X/S and Windows via Steam.[26][27] The game is expected to be released in 2024.[28]
