Flight of Nova is a 2022 physics-based open-world spaceflight simulation game developed and published by Aerovery Lab. The player assumes the role of a spacecraft pilot, exploring an Earth-sized desert planet orbiting the fictitious star "Noren."[1] The planet is populated with numerous surface bases and surrounded by many orbiting space stations. The player can perform pre-made missions, or play in free-fly or rogue mode, wherein they may fly wherever they please.[1]

The game simulates realistic physics and aerodynamics, including realistic gravitation and orbital physics, atmospheric density based on Earth data, aerodynamic drag according to vessel shape, air friction calculations, and real-time accurate orbit data.[2]

Gameplay[edit]

The game simulates Newtonian physics and real-time orbital dynamics. The player's ship will continue on its trajectory unless acted on by an external force; the ship's speed is not limited while in space; if spun, the ship will rotate forever unless RCS and/or air resistance is used to stop its rotation.

The planet the player explores, named NVA-31, is 12,700 km in diameter and based off of Earth in terms of atmospheric characteristics, size, and gravity.[1] The player can land anywhere on its surface.

There are three flyable spacecraft which the player can switch between. All flyable spacecraft are SSTO spaceplanes; all of them function both in the atmosphere and in space. The player can swap between spacecraft by landing (or docking) near the target craft and then switching to it via a menu. Each spacecraft is destructible, and susceptible to overheating; if the player performs atmospheric reentry too quickly or too aggressively, the ship will disintegrate.[3]

There are three game modes as of October 2023: free-fly, map operations, and rogue mode. In free-fly mode, the player spawns at a station of their choice and flies where they please with definite objective. In map operations, the player goes through a pre-made mission in a specific region or orbital station.[1] In rogue mode, the player performs global missions at their leisure, based on messages they receive on their "Flight Management System,"[1] abbreviated FMS, which is unique to rogue mode.

The game can be played with a gamepad, a keyboard and mouse, or a HOTAS system.[2] The player can switch between a first-person view of their cockpit, a third-person chase view, and a fixed view from a camera locked to the hull of the craft's exterior.

Reception[edit]

Santiago Cuberos of Skyward Flight Media called the game "wonderfully-crafted," saying "[it] is a title with a lot of promise." He compared it to another spaceflight simulator, Elite Dangerous, saying "[...] travel times will be long, so do not coming [sic] expecting an experience similar to ED in this regard."[3]
