Michael J. O'Connor (born July 5, 1944) is an American author, business advisor, executive coach, and motivational speaker in the fields of organizational development and individual performance. He is the founder of the Center for Managing by Values, creator of the Managing by Values process, and the founder of Life Associates.

Early life and education[edit]

O'Connor was born on July 5, 1944 in Waterbury, Connecticut. He received his B.S. degree in the social sciences from Central Connecticut State University, an M.A. in the behavioral sciences and psychology from Trinity College, and a Ph.D. in management from the University of Connecticut.

Career[edit]

In 1970, O'Connor founded Life Associates in Hartford, Connecticut to pursue his research and consulting in the fields of organizational and individual motivation and performance. He subsequently founded the Center for Managing by Values.

O'Connor has consulted with Citibank/Citigroup, Hughes Space & Communications, Avery-Dennison Co., Edelman Worldwide Communications and Public Relations, Pillsbury, Black & Decker, Bank of America, Pfizer Labs, Marriott, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and John Deere.

O'Connor's books have been published in more than 20 languages. He collaborated on two titles, The Platinum Rule, released in 1996 by Warner Business Books, and 2009's People Smart with author Tony Alessandra.[1] They include GPS for Success with Stephen Covey, John Gray, Les Brown (Insight Publishing, 2009); Stepping Stones to Success with Deepak Chopra, Jack Canfield, Denis Waitly (Insight Publishing, 2009); The Leader Within with Drea Zigarmi (Prentice Hall, 2004); Managing by Values (2nd edition) with Ken Blanchard (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2003); and The Mysteries of Motivation (with Sandra Merwin, Carlson Learning Company, 1988). He has also authored The Global Profiles System (online assessment and development tools).

His speaking engagements include the Society for Human Resource Management, the North Carolina Technology Association Leadership Conference (Aug 2007)(1), the International Speakers Bureau (Nov 2006); the Conference Board's Executive Coaching Seminars for Senior Leaders (Nov 2005); the Congress of Human Resource Professionals (Pamplona, Spain), the Hay Consulting Group International Conference (Lyon, France), the National Consortium of Community Colleges, and the SAS Customer Conference.

Personal life[edit]

O'Connor lives in Florida with his wife. They have two adult children and five grandchildren.
