Michael Simkins

Michael Simkins (born 4 February 1956) is an English actor, author, broadcaster, and journalist. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and has appeared in over 100 stage productions, as well as numerous television dramas and feature films. Simkins is also the author of several books and contributes regularly to British newspapers and radio programmes.

Early life and education

Simkins was born in Brighton, Sussex, England, on 4 February 1956.[1] He trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1978.[2]

Career

Theatre

Simkins has had a long stage career, appearing in more than 100 productions. He has worked extensively in the West End, at the National Theatre, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His notable roles include appearances in Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Company, Oh! What a Lovely War, Donkey’s Years, and Democracy.[3]

Television

Simkins has appeared in a wide range of British television series, often in supporting or recurring roles. His television credits include The Crown, EastEnders, Silent Witness, Grantchester, Father Brown, Finding Alice, and Miss Scarlett & the Duke.[2]

Film

His film credits include V for Vendetta (2005), Topsy-Turvy (1999), and The Iron Lady (2011).[4]

Writing

Simkins is the author of several non-fiction books, many of which mix memoir, humour, and commentary on British life and the acting profession. His debut memoir, What’s My Motivation? (2004), recounts his early acting career and was selected as BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week. Other titles include Fatty Batter (2006), a childhood memoir; Detour de France (2008), a cycling travelogue; The Last Flannelled Fool (2012), a cricket-themed journey; and The Rules of Acting (2013).[5]

He is also a regular contributor to British newspapers such as The Times, The Daily Telegraph, and The Guardian.[6]

Other work

Simkins is an active broadcaster and public speaker. He frequently appears on BBC Radio 4 and at literary festivals, and gives after-dinner speeches. He is also a member of the Council of RADA.[2]

Personal life

Simkins is married to actress Julia Deakin.[1]
