Michele Carlson
Michele Carlson is an artist, critic, writer, and educator based in Washington, D.C..
Career
From 2016 to 2019 Carlson was the Executive Director of Art Practical, an online art publication based in San Francisco, CA[1]. Currently an Associate Professor of Printmaking at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design[2], she previously taught at the California College of the Arts as an Associate Professor in Visual and Critical Studies[3]. Her research and writing investigates decolonial and socio-historical narratives and how power operates within cultural exchanges. She focuses heavily on racial grief, violence, and representation in art and media.[4] She is also a co-founder of the artist collective Related Tactics, with artists Weston Teruya and Nathan Watson.[5]
Curatorial Work
As part of her work with Related Tactics, Carlson participated in SFMOMA's 2018 Added Value project, organized by Stephanie Syjuco and the Prelinger Library.[6]
Working individually, Carlson most recently curated "Estamos contra el muro | We Are Against the Wall" at Southern Exposure (Sep 9-Oct 15, 2016), which investigated the politics of walls and borders.[7] Previous curatorial projects include "Only a Signal Shown" (2013),[8] and "Ehren Tool: One Death Is a Tragedy" (2014) at Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland.[9]

Carlson's writing has appeared in Art in America, KQED, Hyphen (magazine) where she served as Editor in Chief, and Afterimage (magazine).[10][11][12][13]
