Austin Walker is an American writer, podcaster and games critic. He was the editor-in-chief at Waypoint, and has worked as a host of the podcasts Waypoint Radio and Friends at the Table. Often centered around games, his work frequently deals with political and social justice issues. He is the IP Director at Possibility Space.

Career[edit]

Walker received a Bachelor's degree in philosophy from Hofstra University and a Master's degree in aesthetics and politics from California Institute of the Arts. Walker wrote as a freelancer, publishing several pieces for Paste. While working on a PhD in Media studies at University of Western Ontario, Walker was hired by Giant Bomb in 2015.[1]

Walker left Giant Bomb in June 2016 to become the editor-in-chief at Waypoint, Vice's gaming vertical.[2] In mid-2019, Vice folded in many of its verticals, and Waypoint was rebranded as Vice Games.[3] Later in 2019, Walker left his position as an editor but continued to be a host of Waypoint Radio until 2021.

Since 2014, Walker has been a host of the podcast Friends at the Table, an "actual-play podcast about critical worldbuilding, smart characterization, and fun interaction between good friends."[4] For most of the series, Walker is playing as a game-master of a role-playing game with several other players. The series has had seasons set in various different settings, such as high fantasy or cyberpunk. The show features stories dense with political themes and lore.

Walker collaborated with Evan Narcisse and Daniel Bayliss on a graphic novel for WWE's The New Day, which released in 2020.[5] He wrote a short story in From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back[6] and contributed to Where the Water Tastes Like Wine.[7]

In 2021, it was announced that Walker would be the IP director at Possibility Space, a studio founded by Jeff Strain.[8]

Personal life[edit]

Walker identifies as a bisexual man. He refers to himself as a Marxist.
