Michele Martinez
Michele Martinez is a former city council member of Santa Ana, California. She is a registered Democrat.[1]
Martinez was born on August 16, 1979 in Torrance, California. She was raised by her great grandmother, as her mother was in prison until 1990. Michele moved to Santa Ana at eleven years old, but asked to live with her aunt in Santa Ana when her family moved back to Los Angeles.[1] She graduated from Cal State Fullerton, where she received her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.[2]
Martinez was first elected to the Santa Ana city council in 2006, becoming the youngest elected official in the history of Santa Ana at 27 years of age.[3] In 2008, Martinez ran for mayor against incumbent Miguel Pulido, and was also Pulido's first challenger since being elected as mayor in 1992.[4][1] Martinez was defeated by Pulido, and was the subject of numerous personal attacks during the campaign, most notably using her family's history to paint her as a gang member and drug dealer.[5][1] Martinez was re-elected to two other city council terms in 2010 and 2014.[6]
At the end of her term limit as a city council member, Martinez made one more attempt to run for mayor in 2018, but once again lost to incumbent Miguel Pulido.[7] Martinez was a proponent of term limits while being a city council member, eventually resulting in giving the mayor term limits.[8][1]
Martinez ran in the 2012 California State Assembly election, but lost in the primary election with only 16.7% of the vote.[9] In 2016, she ran for District 1 of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, but lost to Andrew Do with 46.92% of the vote.[10]
In September 2015, Martinez was included in Huffington Post's article 40 under 40: Latinos in American Politics.[11]
