Mickey Gideon (born 8 August 1972) is an Israeli neurosurgeon who is known mainly for his role in operating a surgery to separate Siamese twins (Craniopagus twins) of Bedouin origin that were born conjugated in their skulls and parts of their brains.

The surgery was performed while the twins were a year old, which made them the youngest Siamese twins to have ever successfully separated by medical intervention. It was the first time that this kind of procedure was performed in Israel and the 18th time in the world.

Biography[edit]

Gideon was born in 1972 in Tehran, the son of Iranian Jews, the second of three brothers.

In 1990, after graduating from high school and due to persecutions of the Jewish community by the guards of the Islamic revolution, he was forced to flee the country along with his older brother, and after a month of stay in a UN refugee camp in Pakistan, he repatriated to Israel.

He started his higher education as a student in the Faculty of Engineering at Ben Gurion University, and after two and a half years began his studies at the Faculty of Medicine. After graduating in 2003 he began his neurosurgery residency at the Soroka Medical Center, and as of 2011 he is a member of the Union of European Neurosurgeons - EANS. He later specialized in pediatric neurosurgery at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, USA, followed by a specialization in pediatric epilepsy surgery at the Rothschild Hospital in Paris. Since 2017, he is the head of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department at Soroka Medical Center in Israel.

Professional career[edit]

Gideon has performed a number of unique surgeries, some of which are pioneering in the field of neurosurgery.

He removed a brain tumor, which reached the size of an average melon, from a two-year-old girl, while the further development of the child was not affected.[1]

Gideon restored forty percent of the cranial vault of a man who suffered a severe head injury in an accident, while using composite materials that made it possible to successfully complete the prosthetics of the cranium and return the victim to complete function.[2]

In 2015 Gideon performed an operation to 'spread' the face of a 10-year-old female patient with Cruson's syndrome, enabling a better future neurological development. During the operation, a part of the child's skull, facial bones and jaw structures were removed, parts of the nose and eye sockets were separated, which were then connected to a special device for stretching and restoring facial symmetry[3]

In September 2021 Gideon successfully performed an operation to separate one-year-old Siamese twins fused at their skull and parts of their brains. It was the first time such procedure was performed in Israel and the 18th time in the world. The operation lasted 12 hours and became a sensation in the world of neurosurgery, which caused a wide resonance in the international media.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] In the process of preparing for the operation, Gideon used three-dimensional modeling methods and virtual reality technologies, which had not been used in the preoperative neurosurgery protocol before.[15] A month after the operation, the twins were discharged from the hospital.

Public arena[edit]

Gideon is a lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Ben Gurion University and Braude Interdisciplinary College, both located in Israel. He also started a class teaching the Persian language at the Oriental Studies Department of Ben Gurion University. One of his students was Avi Issacharov, a well-kown Israeli journalist and the creator of the Netflix TV series Fauda.

Gideon is actively involved in the development of Israeli medical innovation start-ups. He is an advisor to BioMed companies in the fields of medical robotics, medical equipment and healthcare digitalization, and also advises the medical venture capital Almeda.

In October 2021, by the invitation of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, he visited Baku. During this visit he addressed the students of the Azerbaijan Medical University and held a charitable consultation at the Bona Dea clinic.
