Mikey Williams (born June 26, 2004) is an American basketball player who attends San Ysidro High School in San Diego, California. He is considered a top player in the 2023 recruiting class and has offers from many NCAA Division I programs.

Early life

Williams first held a basketball when he was 10 months old and grew up under the tutelage of his father.[1] In his childhood, he mainly played on an outdoor court in his apartment complex. In elementary school, Williams got into fights with bullies on a regular basis.[2] For years, he worked as a ball boy for San Ysidro High School head coach Terry Tucker because "we couldn't keep him out of the gym."[3]

In middle school, Williams played for a travel team called the Malcolm Thomas All-Stars.[1] In seventh and eighth grade, he was ranked the number one player in the 2023 class by the Naismith National Youth All-American Report.[1][4] In eighth grade, Williams joined the North Coast Blue Chips, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, where he was teammates with Bronny James, the son of basketball player LeBron James. His cousin Braylen Bowman also plays basketball and is ranked at #37 in the nation for the class of 2025.[2]

High school career

Williams attends San Ysidro High School in San Diego, where he entered his freshman season as the top-ranked player in his age group.[5] He scored 41 points in his high school debut in a victory over El Cajon Valley (CA) on November 20, and followed that up with a 50-point performance against Mission Bay (CA) a few days later.[6] On December 13, in just his ninth game, he scored 77 points against Kearny (CA) to break the CIF San Diego Section – as well as the California freshman – single-game scoring record.[7] Williams scored 35 points in a January loss to nationally ranked Rancho Christian (CA) led by top 2020 recruit Evan Mobley.[8]

Recruiting

Williams received offers from many NCAA Division I programs, including Arizona, Arizona State and San Diego State before starting his high school career.[9]

Personal life

Williams' father Mahlon played basketball for Sweetwater High School and was an All-CIF San Diego Section selection, and his mother Charisse played softball for Kearny High School and Hampton University.
