Miko M. Wilford is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Iowa State University known for her research on eyewitness identification, learning and memory, plea bargaining, and other aspects of legal decision-making.[1]
Wilford was named a Rising Star by the Association of Psychological Science in 2020.[2] In 2024, she was named a Fellow of the American Psychology–Law Society (American Psychological Association, Division 41)[3] and received the Saleem Shah Early Career Award[4][5] from the American Psychology–Law Society in recognition of her early career excellence and contributions to psychology and law.[6]
Biography
Wilford attended Iowa State University, where she graduated magna cum laude with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Applied Statistics in 2009. She continued her education at Iowa State University, completing a Master's of Science degree in Psychology in 2012 and a Ph.D in Psychology in 2014, supervised by Gary L. Wells and Jason C.K. Chan.[7] Wilford's doctoral research was funded by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), awarded in 2011[8] and an American Psychology–Law Society Dissertation Award.[9]
Wilford is the Principal Investigator of the Psycho-Legal Experiments and Applications lab at Iowa State where her team conducts research on false confessions, eyewitness misidentification, plea bargains, and learning and memory.[1][10][11] Wilford aims to understand factors that lead to the acceptance of plea bargains from adults and juveniles.[12] Her research using role-playing simulation to test plea decision models was funded through an National Science Foundation CAREER Award.[13][14][15] More recently, her research program has been extended to incorporate virtual reality in the study of plea decision making.[5]
Prior to joining the faculty at Iowa State, Wilford was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell.[16] In addition to her research career, Wilford has served as a trial consultant for cases concerning eyewitness misidentification and false guilty pleas.[16]
