Miovision is a Canadian technology company headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario. It provides intelligent mobility solutions for cities, municipalities, and transportation agencies. The company develops systems for traffic data collection, intersection monitoring, and transportation network optimization using artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies.[1][2]

History

Miovision was founded in 2005 by Kurtis McBride, Kevin Madill and Tony Brijpaul while studying engineering at the University of Waterloo. The company’s early focus was on automating traffic data collection to replace traditional manual traffic counting methods.[3][4]

In 2014, Miovision moved its headquarters to Catalyst 137, a former furniture factory in downtown Kitchener that was redeveloped into a technology hub. Since then, the company has expanded to employ more than 500 people and operates across North America and internationally.[5]

Timeline
2005: Founding Miovision is established by University of Waterloo engineering students Kurtis McBride, Kevin Madill, and Anthony (Tony) Brijpaul.[3][6]
2021: Acquisition of Traffop The company acquires Traffop, a cloud-based Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) platform.[7][8][9]
2022: Acquisition of Rapid Flow The company acquires Rapid Flow Technologies, developer of the SURTRAC adaptive traffic signal control system, which enables real-time optimization of traffic networks.[10][11]
2023: Acquisitions of MicroTraffic and Global Traffic Technologies (GTT)   The company acquires MicroTraffic and GTT, scaling its Miovision One and Core platforms and expanding into predictive road safety and traffic signal priority control.[12][13][14][15][16]
2024: Acquisitions of  Traffic Technology Services (TTS) and CJ Hensch The company acquires TTS and CJ Hensch & Associates, strengthening its work in connected vehicle (V2X) technologies, traffic safety applications, and traffic study services.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23]

Products and Services

Miovision provides intelligent transportation solutions to over 5,000 customers in 68 countries. Its permanent and portable systems have detected more than 77 billion vehicles and 3 billion pedestrians and cyclists as of 2024.[24][25][26]

The company's entry into the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) market began in 2005 with the development of a portable video-based device for traffic data collection. This device, known as Miovision Scout, served as an alternative to traditional road tubes and manual counting by using computer vision to automatically identify and classify vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.[27]

Building on this foundation, Miovision expanded into city-wide infrastructure solutions, including devices such as the Core Detection & Counts Module (DCM) and SmartView 360 and approach cameras, enabling continuous data collection and intersection monitoring. [28][29][30][31][32]

The company’s growth through acquisition has shaped its current platform. In 2021, Miovision acquired Traffop, a software company specializing in traffic signal performance analysis.[7][8][9] In 2023, Miovision raised $296 million CAD in funding, supporting further expansion, including the acquisition of Global Traffic Technologies (GTT), the developer of the Opticom signal priority control system.[33][4][15][16] This acquisition integrated emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) and transit signal priority (TSP) capabilities into Miovision’s offerings.[34][35][36][37]

Miovision’s suite of solutions include:

  • Miovision One: a cloud-based Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) where users can interact with all of the company’s applications.[38]
  • Detection and Counts: camera-based vehicle and pedestrian detection, classification and counting systems.[28][29][30]
  • Adaptive: adaptive signal control systems that leverage real-time sensor inputs and machine learning.[39]
  • Continuous Safety Monitoring: near-miss and collision analytics for cars and vulnerable road users.[40]
  • Performance Measures: reports “automated traffic signal performance measures” or ATSPMs, as well as issues related to maintenance, equipment health, data quality and signal operations.[8]
  • Intersection monitoring: a cloud-based system for remotely monitoring intersection telemetry.[41][42]
  • V2X Solutions: vehicle-to-everything communication services that enables vehicles to exchange information with city traffic infrastructure and other road users.[43][44]
  • Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP): communicates from emergency vehicles to intersections to give first responders (Fire, Police, EMS) green lights.[34]
  • Transit Signal Priority (TSP): communicates from transit vehicles to intersections to adjust signal timings in accordance with transit schedules and provides vehicle analytics back to transit operators.[35][36][37]
  • Traffic Studies: Miovision Scout hardware is used to collect multimodal data on vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians such as Turning Movement Counts (TMCs), Automatic Traffic Recorder (ATR) counts, roundabout counts, and pathway studies.[45]

Recognition

Miovision has been featured in Canadian and international publications for its innovation in smart city infrastructure and traffic optimization. The company was listed in The Globe and Mail’s list of Canada’s Top Growing Companies, as well as Deloitte’s Fast 500 (North America) and Fast 50 (Canada) rankings in 2024 and 2025.[46][47]

In 2024, CEO Kurtis McBride received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year (Ontario) award. The company was also recognized among Canada’s Best Managed Companies and Canada’s Greenest Employers.[48][49][50]
