Miss Cherry Delight (born Andrea Lorraine Jimenez on November 4th, 1986) is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, and Tik-Tok personality.
Early Life and Career[edit]
Miss Cherry Delight was born Andrea Lorraine Jimenez on November 4th, 1986 at New York Hospital as the Half-Filipino/Half-Sicilian only child to artists.[1]. Her due date was Halloween, a catalyst to her connection to the holiday, with an emphasis on competitive costume pageantry and the preternatural. An isolated upbringing, minimal contact with other children, and overexposure to 50's and 60's pop culture, music, and liberal arts distanced her from her peers, and she experienced bullying through her elementary school years. She overcame this through pageantry in school art projects and through elaborate Halloween costumes, as even at a young age, she loved to stun and silence a crowd.
Cherry started dancing at the early age of 2 years old, before taking acting and singing lessons at the age of 5. She attended ballet, tap, and jazz classes at The Dancer’s School in Brewster, New York from the ages of 3-12, during which she decided to turn her focus more to acting, as her dance teacher thought she was too young to begin Pointe training. She stopped voice training around the age of 7, due to her mother’s watchful eye peering into her lessons, which caused Cherry to feel self-conscious and annoyed, despite her desire to learn to sing. Once she began private classical voice coaching with Marci Elyn Schien[2] at the age of 14, Cherry focused more on singing as the core of her skills as an entertainer.
Miss Cherry Delight cites her exposure to a life-sized Coors Light Elvira cardboard cutout in a bodega when she was 4 years old. She has said that she dropped to her knees and thought it was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen[3]. At the age of 6, while sleeping over at a cousin’s house, she caught the ending of the film Elvira Mistress of the Dark, featuring the tassel-twirling scene that inspired her to become a performer. Now as an adult, her 1994 Coors Light Elvira cardboard cutout is among her most prized possessions, as a reminder of her foreshadowing inspiration.
Cherry grew up attending summer regional productions at Goodspeed Opera House, as her maternal uncle, Joe Messina, plays Bass in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra[4]. When she was 9, her family attended the particularly intense and gruesome 1996 regional production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Timothy Nolen as the title role[5]. Her family allowed her to have one piece of show merch - she chose a bloody apron that said “Mrs. Lovett’s Meat Pies: The Best Pies in London - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”. This production was her first exposure to stage blood, which she cites as a profound moment in her life. By intermission, she was wearing the apron while pacing up and down the aisle of the theatre, knowing that she wanted to act, perform, and make art just like the show she witnessed, as she determined to make her life as fulfilling as watching the show felt to her[4]. The summer of 1996 also piqued her serious interest in horror, and her father began to introduce her to psychological horror movies, including Psycho and all things Hitchcock, as well as The Shining[4]. Miss Cherry Delight and Jim Holdridge, who played Tobias Ragg[6] in the production, recently conducted a mutual interview on how both of their lives changed over the past 25 years as a result of being in the show, and watching the show, respectively, and this interview will be released soon. Sweeney Todd is the reason many references to cannibalism and other elements of the show are included in Miss Cherry Delight’s lyrics. Cherry also has a tattoo dedicated to her childhood Sweeney Todd epiphany[7].
Her early acting experiences include becoming an original member of Eclipse Theater Company (ETC) at Northern Westchester Center for the Arts (NWCA) as an acting and musical theater student of Paul Perez and George Griggs. She attended comedy improv classes, joining "Improv Theater Jam", a teen comedy improv troupe that would battle local adult improv troupes. She also focused on extracurricular theatre, performing in both regular season shows and children’s theater. While at NWCA, she studied with Marci Ellen Schien[2], who coached her for vocal competitions. During this time, she competed in Westchester Teen Idol at Irving Town Hall, where she placed in the final 5 in 2003, and won 2nd place in 2004, with Jesse McCartney as one of the judges. She was also a trained belly-dancer, and performed with a troupe known as The Desert Mermaids at Pulse Performing Arts Center, a brand of NWCA.
Pushed toward Broadway throughout her life, Cherry’s family wanted her to be a Broadway star. However, she attributes her first exposure to goth culture and to Alternative, Metal, and Shock Rock to her older cousin Lauren, who introduced her to such genres, and bands such as Kittie, Jack Off Jill, Korn, Type O Negative, Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson around her pre-teen years. These influences were instrumental to her musical development and outward self-expression.
She attended Western Connecticut State University for two years, after which she applied to American Musical and Dramatic Academy and Circle in the Square Theatre School, the latter of which she chose to attend[4]. Around this time, she realized Broadway was not her calling, as she didn't desire to be an ensemble member, or mold herself into an existing character, but rather to portray her own unique self and tell her own stories. When she completed her training at Circle in the Square Theatre School, she officially began her journey as Miss Cherry Delight, as she desired to embrace complete individuality in every way[8].
Cherry was brought up in an abusive household with a violent father, and was subjected to Munchhausen by Proxy by her mother, which took many years to overcome. She suffered grooming and rape at 11 years old from a member of her family married to her father's cousin. She was placed in mental institutions and special ed programs in an effort to keep her docile and childlike, until she one day realized on her own that this was not the way she wanted to live, and reclaimed herself as a survivor and a “self-made weapon”[9]. In 2019, 22 years after her major sexual assault, her rapist was put on trial in Florida under Judge Melanie Chase for another case involving a 14 and 16 year old. Cherry wrote a letter to the Judge explaining her experience with the man, pleading against his release. Cherry later read the verdict that he was given 22 life sentences, and realized that the number of life sentences he was given was a gift from the Judge to Cherry[9]. The Miss Cherry Delight song “Mine” is all about her struggles and darker moments of childhood.
Miss Cherry Delight[edit]
The origins of the name Miss Cherry Delight come from her childhood. As a baby, her artistic parents found it striking, with her pale skin and jet black hair, to dress her in clothing with fruit prints, particularly cherries. She also grew up near a Stew Leonard’s (known as the Disneyland of Dairy Stores[10]) location in Danbury, Connecticut, where animatronics such as the provocatively-designed Chiquita Banana inspired her to make a connection between fruit and sex appeal. She decided she wanted to sound like an appealing and edible dessert in the very literal sense, but as Miss Cherry Delight developed over the years of her growing and healing, it became a lure for something much darker. Rather than choosing an outright scary name, “Miss Cherry Delight” seemed less obvious, as it can set up an audience to expect something familiar, warm, and sweet, but surprise them when the result is something visceral and wild. She says that her name “is a facade meant to lure you in. I'm disguised as a delicious, familiar confection, a poisonous cake. I am meant to be eaten, but I am going to eat you! There is a profoundly romantic and tragic symbolism in the selective human consumption of my own species that inspires my art”[4]. Her song “Cherry Blood” references Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” lyric, “tastes so good, make a grown man cry”, as she wanted people to know that she is different from any “cherry” known before[9].
Coney Island was one of the first big steps in Miss Cherry Delight’s development, as she often attended and was inspired by the Burlesque at the Beach shows, particularly the Miss Coney Island pageant[11], the title of which she would eventually attain[12][1]. While at Coney Island, she met Jeff Weinman and his daughter Lucy Weinman, who “adopted” her musically, forming her first band, Miss Cherry Delight and the Big Tent Jazz Band[13], performing traditional pre-1935 American Jazz at speakeasy parties and the like.
On New Year’s Eve 1999, Cherry’s cousin Lauren showed her a Marilyn Manson article in a music magazine where he spoke about his then-new girlfriend, Dita Von Teese, and stated she reminded him of The Black Dahlia[14]. This article made Cherry dive into the cold case, which became a passionate obsession of hers, and a gateway to her fascination with true crime. In her Burlesque debut with Cheeky Monkey Sideshow[15] in Washington D.C.’s Palace of Wonders, she performed as a featured act, doing a fan dance strip tease as The Black Dahlia revealing her face and severed torso to The Decemberists’ “Culling Of The Fold”[4]. Her prosthetic makeup inspiration was based on the autopsy photos, as well as the visual of the corpse girl in My Chemical Romance's music video for the song “Helena". After this, she began to pursue Burlesque in New York City - during her burlesque days, Cherry also toured with Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque (RGB), a famous burlesque troupe that put on an Animaniacs-themed burlesque show[8][16]. In the pit band of Rhinestone Gorilla was an individual who would eventually become Miss Cherry Delight’s rhythm guitarist and bassist, Mike Forzano.
Cherry was hired to perform her Black Dahlia act at the 11th wedding anniversary of Joe Coleman and Whitney Ward on 11/11/2011. At this event, Bambi the Mermaid[17], the first Miss Coney Island, curator of "Burlesque At The Beach" at Coney Island USA's "Sideshows By The Seashore" Theater, was scouting for pageant contestants and officially asked Cherry to compete in the pageant[1][18]. She won Miss Coney Island 2013, and used her position to become an ambassador for the Coney Island community and theater during Hurricane Sandy, which completely destroyed the first floor of the Coney Island USA building[19]. Through donations and volunteer work, the building was repaired and renovated, and the funds ensured that the 2013 Mermaid Parade would take place, in which Cherry triumphantly participated.
Cherry auditioned to host a dinner theater burlesque show at Duane Park - known for being the site of Lady Gaga’s debut in the New York scene - where she met trumpet player, Brian Newman (wiki-cite). Cherry lied during her audition by telling the Duane Park owners she had experience with hosting, and she got the job of hosting two shows: A magic show entitled "Cabaret De Illusions", and "Cherry's Jubilee", where she introduced circus sideshow performers to Duane Park for the first time[20]. This important life experience is what Cherry credits to this day for being responsible for her comfort in commanding a stage with banter, humor, and winning the undivided attention of an audience.
During her time as a regular performer in Coney Island[12], Cherry became good friends with Wild West performer and stuntman Chris McDaniel[21], who introduced her to Todd Robbins. Robbins, at the time, was developing his interactive horror show, Play Dead, a collaboration with Teller of the magic duo Penn & Teller[22]. She auditioned for the show at The Players in New York City, where they notably asked her to show what her movements would be if she were to be birthed out of someone’s chest cavity. Teller applauded her performance, and she got the role. They prepared for the show by spending a month in the large backroom of a Las Vegas casino, using military-grade night vision goggles to rehearse haunt-style, with interactive audience activities such as touching, throwing frozen rose petals, super-soaking, and the like[4]. The usher for the theater was Pearls Daily, who became Cherry’s best friend, and inspired a tattoo across Cherry’s forearm in Pearls’ handwriting which reads, “ready for the show”. Cherry inducted Pearls into the burlesque industry kittening for her at Duane Park[23]. Daily is now an international burlesque star, and also played the role of Margery in the Los Angeles run of Play Dead[24][25]. Credited as Drea Lorraine in this show, Cherry was the understudy for the role of Margery Crandon, who appears as an undead creature, emerging while covered in blood with white eyes[26]. She eventually got to play the role, and when she saw herself in the mirror in character, she felt comfortable and beautiful in that moment, which inspired her current Miss Cherry Delight aesthetic[4].
She worked one-on-one with Johnny Thompson, along with Teller and Robbins, who became a father figure to her[27]. Through Play Dead, she also got to super-soak Alan Rickman in the face, to which she says he reacted in a very calm and complacent fashion. Cherry credits Play Dead as the experience that led her to afford moving to New York City, as Chris McDaniel offered to sublease his apartment to Cherry and her boyfriend while he performed a show in Mexico, thereby saving up money to move to their own apartment in NYC, where Cherry still resides today.
After Play Dead closed, she worked at Lush while doing freelance work at School of Visual Arts as a figure model, and as a hair and makeup artist for the photography department, where she met and befriended Len DeLessio, who photographed her as Miss Cherry Delight (and whose website she is featured on at: http://www.delessio.com). She was also educated at Make-up Designory, where she earned a degree as a Professional Make-up Artist. She worked the counter at M.A.C. Bloomingdales White Plains before joining the cast of Play Dead and moving to New York City. Cherry still works as a freelance high fashion makeup artist.
Cherry broadened her horizons on her appreciation of horror movies as a teen with a friend named Dan Smash, who she met on MySpace. He showed her a range of iconic and B horror films, and also introduced her to the band GWAR by showing her a tape of the Live From Antartica concert, as well as the albums Scumdogs of the Universe and Dave Brockie's side project The Dave Brockie Experience. Around the age of 17, Cherry started attending GWAR shows starting with the Sounds of the Underground tour in 2006, and whenever the band’s tour dates landed within the Westchester area, primarily at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, and The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. Cherry joined the “Bohab” community, after which she was scouted by Matt Miner and Matt Maguire in 2017, as they were in the process of developing a new character named Estrogina to promote the comic book Orgasmageddon[28]. A contrast to Slymenstra, Estrogina is a Harley Quinn-esque vibrant young character, who is a fierce and protective fighter. Cherry helped develop the character alongside GWAR founder Chuck Varga, the Sexecutioner. They made an appearance together in character at Five Points Festival in Brooklyn to debut the comic[29]. Cherry then made a solo live appearance as Estrogina, signing autographs and posing for fan photos at Coast City Comics in Maine[30][31], closing off the night with a performance with Gwell-o.
Though grateful for her Gwar experiences, Cherry decided she still desired to pursue her own creative projects. Bambi the Mermaid, wife of Chuck Varga, encouraged Cherry to focus on creating her own vision away from the context of an existing band[32].
Music was not new to Cherry’s career, especially as she had produced and fronted an ongoing variety show known as “Cherry Melodies”, with a live pit band - as of 2018, she changed the tune of Cherry Melodies to a rock and metal twist, with “Cherry Hellodies”[32].
At this stage of her career, Cherry pondered, “If Miss Cherry Delight could say anything, what would she say?”, as she opened the notes section of her phone while on the Manhattan-bound L-train, en route to a double-shift at Ichabod’s restaurant, and typed out the words to “Cherry Blood”, the first song she officially wrote, on August 18th, 2018. She called her musician friend Mike Forzano and said, “I think I wrote my first song...I don't know what to do - what should I do?”, after which he connected her with Justin Ethan Mathews “J-Murder”, a world-class producer, songwriter, and guitarist[33]. A few days later, the two recorded “Cherry Blood”, and Miss Cherry Delight’s music career officially began.
Mike Forzano then joined Miss Cherry Delight’s band under the name “Thunderbeast”, as she began working on an EP with Justin. The first track Miss Cherry Delight released was the second song she wrote, on the Brooklyn-bound M train, "The 31st”, which was released on October 13th 2018 - Cherry decided to release this track first believing this song had more mass appeal, and chose this earlier date for a better chance to land on mainstream Halloween playlists[34]. “Cherry Blood” was released next, on October 31st 2018, with more success[35], and today, ”Cherry Blood" is Miss Cherry Delight's most popular track on music downloading platforms and TikTok sounds. The music video for Cherry Blood was shot and directed by Box Visuals, with scenes filmed on a hidden trail in Babylon, New York, a Harlem grocery store, and in the apartment of burlesque performer "Agent Wednesday”, in September 2018. Around this time, Miss Cherry Delight was featured in her first press as a musical artist in Moped Magazine[36]
What started off as an EP transformed into a full-length album as Eat The Evidence was created. She incorporated references to her earlier act as the Black Dahlia in “Broken Doll”, and also referenced the famous Charles Manson “I’m nobody” interview in the song “Straight Razor”[4]. For "Sea Of Teeth", Laura Lee Anderson was brought into the studio to sing the part of the Mermaid, and to play violin on the track. The track "Oxytocin" brought about Cherry's alter-ego, known as “Cherry Daddy”, a famous polyamorous entrepreneur dominatrix, who the Miss Cherry Delight character hallucinates as a separate person, and a comforting image of stability and love; the pleasure sounds on this track are performed by both Justin and Cherry, and the "Yes, Cherry Daddy" line is spoken by Justin[36]. The album was near completion when the husband of Cherry’s friend Stitch Azintime, Johnny Jewel, passed away, for whom she subsequently wrote a song (“Stitch & Johnny”) to close out the album. The album was released on May 11th, 2019, and an album release party was held at the Coney Island USA Theater[37], where Miss Cherry Delight and her band performed the whole album in full, singing her songs live for the first time.
The 2019 album release began the live run of sold-out concerts throughout the NYC area[38] including at Gramercy Theater[9], Gold Sounds, and the Slipper Room[39], the site of her last show before the 2020 pandemic lockdown[8][40].
The first single after the release of Eat The Evidence was Cherry’s first and only YouTube-exclusive track, a cover of Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra’s "Summer Wine”, turned into a dark Nine Inch Nails-influenced sexual powerhouse anthem - this duet also features the guest vocals of J-Murder[41].
Cherry followed up on Eat The Evidence with the single, “The Monster”, where she evokes Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein[42]. In 2021, she released “My Altar”, which took her visuals to a new level in a “found footage” documentary style music video that references Jeffrey Dahmer and The Poughkeepsie Tapes, portraying part of Miss Cherry Delight’s mythos as a “closeted cannibal”, which “in her story is actually an addiction she battles and continues to lose”[43].
Miss Cherry Delight has developed her persona into that of a complex and attention-catching “slasher babe anti-hero”, who is powerful yet human, suffering and portraying human struggles, amidst a bloody scene of gore, empowering sexuality, and genuine shock rock.[8][32]. Dylan Greenberg has become a frequent collaborator with Cherry on her music videos, and Glitter Macabre is one of her main stylists[8][43]. She currently studies voice with metal scream coach Jonathan Stancato[4]
Miss Cherry Delight released the single “LIKEYOUHATEME” just before Valentine’s Day of 2022[8][44]. Her friend Teller said of the track, “‘[LikeYouHateMe]’ is a fabulous video and a great, elegantly spare and simple, totally edgy song. I love it”[8].
Miss Cherry Delight’s first post-pandemic show was in the summer of 2022, opening for Vision Video in New York City.
Influences[edit]
In high school, Cherry was always interested in rock and roll music, but also attributes her musical development to listening to artists like Little Richard, James Brown, The Beatles, The Temptations, Freddie Mercury, and Ray Charles. Though she grew up with classical voice training, she also loved blues, rock, and jazz.[4]
On her influences, Cherry has said, “Early Marilyn Manson is a big influence on me from the Spooky Kids era in visuals and musicality, and I'd say that's the biggest influence of all. After that, sound wise I'd say Veruca Salt, Jack Off Jill, NIN, Lords Of Acid, Snake River Conspiracy, Alice In Chains, Rasputina, Jennifer Charles, Orgy, early Britney Spears. In terms of attitude, that's Alice Cooper, Lux Interior of The Cramps, and Wendy O Williams of The Plasmatics as core inspirations in stage presence that brought me to finding myself in my own cherry flavor”[32]. Cherry credits Alice Cooper for core inspiration of her live show spectacle with strong narratives, horror themes, and her "Cherry Daddy" persona[32]. She also cites Tim Burton as an overall influence.
The FMs[edit]
Miss Cherry Delight developed a close and collaborative relationship with the New York City-based Gothic/Alternative band The FMs. The two musical acts first met when they were part of the same concert lineup for a monthly goth music event known as “Stimulate”[45] on February 18th, 2019, when Cherry performed performed her signature Snow White Evil Queen act to "The Most Wonderful Girl" by Lords of Acid. The FMs members at the time were Matte Namer, Frankie Maddox Rex, Michael Butterly and Lucas Leto. Within 2 months, Cherry began to share Michael and Lucas in her band on keyboard and drums. The FMs and Miss Cherry Delight became fast friends as they continued to share stages and concert lineups, then collaborated on the music video for the song “Change Your Men Up”, which Cherry co-directed alongside Dylan Mars Greenberg, while appearing in the video and doing make-up and styling for the performers[46][47].
At the end of 2019, the two acts officially merged their music for the first time when Cherry was invited to co-write the song “Annihilation Denial”, produced by Cherry’s producer Justin Mathews, with part of the music video (directed, shot, and edited by Dylan Mars Greenberg) shot on Cherry’s rooftop during the pandemic on July 28th, 2020[48]. The FM’s Matte Namer has said that Cherry “co-wrote the lyrics for this song (the ones she sings) and came up with some amazingly brilliant lyrics (right on the spot in the studio I might add)”[49].
Cherry continued to work with The FMs, helping them shoot their social media content and encouraging their fan relationships, with regular video series such as “Matte Monday” and “Frankie Friday”, and recording a cover of “Time Warp” to raise funds for Chosen Family Law Center, providing legal services to low-income LGBTQIA+ families[50]. For a time, Rex and Butterly were even neighbors to Cherry, living next door to her apartment until Butterly moved to Connecticut at the beginning of the pandemic, leaving Rex on their own. At the end of 2020, Rex moved to Ithaca to be close to Namer and pursue The FMs head on.
Cherry also worked with The FMs on a merchandise line inspired by a striking set of conceptual artwork by Starr Callahan that she saw while working at the School of Visual Arts[51]. The art, with one image showing five condoms of varying sizes, and the other showing two tampons opening like flowers, struck Cherry in such a way that she thought, “this looks how the FMs sound”, and she introduced Callahan to the band. The funds from the subsequent merchandise line were donated to the Black Trans Travel Fund[52][53].
One part of the main duo of The FMs, Frankie Maddox Rex, passed away on May 11th, 2022[54]. Miss Cherry Delight made the announcement and released a statement on her social media expressing her grief due to her close personal friendship with Rex[55]. Cherry plans to join with Namer on holding a memorial concert to raise money in honor of Rex for “causes Frankie would’ve cared about such as music and causes that support the trans-masc community”[54].
Tik-Tok[edit]
Miss Cherry Delight is also a TikTok personality, who took off in viral popularity in the thick of the pandemic with her origination of the hashtag #CannibalTok.[8]. Because of her early Sweeney Todd influence, an interest in true crime, and fascination with horror, she had researched interviews with real cannibals, such as Papua New Guinea tribes, where they spoke about the taste of human flesh. She mentioned what she had learned in a TikTok video asking, “what's a piece of information that you know that feels illegal to know?”, and while in full Miss Cherry Delight makeup and attire, thoroughly described the taste of human flesh. This quickly went viral with over 1.6 million views, and people believed she was a real cannibal, sending her death threats and duetting her TikTok to alert the internet. This only added to her hype and popularity as “The Cannibal of TikTok”, creating the hashtag “#CannibalTok”[56]. For those who genuinely believed in it, she used the platform of the viral hashtag to communicate the message that learning about dark things doesn't make you dangerous, and that it's okay to be curious and educate yourself as long as you’re not hurting anyone. True crime-inspired Miss Cherry Delight songs about topics such as the Black Dahlia and Charles Manson further support this message. She used the #CannibalTok popularity and platform to inform followers that she was a musical artist, where she built a strong social media following[8]. Her second-most viral video to date is her musical mashup of the lyrics to the Rob Zombie track “Dragula”, set to the melody of “My Favorite Things”, with over 1.8 million views[8]
