Miss Universe 2021 was the 70th Miss Universe pageant, held on December 13, 2021, at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel. Andrea Meza of Mexico crowned Harnaaz Sandhu of India as her successor at the end of the event.[2] This is India's first victory in 21 years, and its third in the history of the pageant.[3] Sandhu is the first Sikh woman to win the title of Miss Universe.[4][5]

The competition featured the return of Steve Harvey as host and Fox as the official broadcaster of the show after being absent for the previous edition.

The pageant was broadcast to hundreds of millions of viewers in 172 countries.[6]

Background[edit]

Location and date[edit]

Port of Eilat, the venue of Miss Universe 2021

In January 2021, it was reported that the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) was in talks to host the 2021 edition of the competition in Costa Rica. The negotiations were later confirmed by Gustavo Segura, serving as the Minister of Tourism in the government of Costa Rica.[7][8] In May 2021, during an interview with People en Español, Andrea Meza stated that the 2021 edition of the competition would be held at the end of the year and acknowledged the fact that her reign would be the one of the shortest in the history of the pageant.[lower-alpha 2][9]

On July 20, 2021, the MUO confirmed that the competition would be held in Eilat, Israel in December 2021.[10] On October 27, the competition was confirmed to be held on December 12 at Universe Dome, a custom-built and temporary arena imported to Eilat from Portugal.[11][12]

Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane, who was eventually finish as the second runner-up at the pageant, was called upon to boycott the paegant held in Israel. She refused to boycott the competition despite strong pressure from the South African government, which withdrew its backing after it was unable to persuade Mswane and South African paegant organizers to pull out of the event. Minister of Arts, Sport and Culture Nathi Mthethwa announced that the government refused to associate itself with the pageant as “the atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians are well documented.”[13][14][15]

Host and performers[edit]

On July 20, 2021, the MUO confirmed that Steve Harvey would return to host the 2021 edition. This marks Harvey's sixth time hosting the competition, after missing the competition's previous edition held in May of that year due to uncertainties with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[10] On October 27, Israeli singer Noa Kirel was announced as a guest performer.[11]

Selection of participants[edit]

Contestants from 80 countries and territories had been selected to compete in the competition. Fifty-three were the winners of their country's national pageant, while twenty-seven were appointed to their positions after being a runner-up of their national pageant or after being selected through a casting process.

Three contestants were designated after the withdrawal of the original contestant. Amandine Petit, who had been crowned Miss France 2021, was initially supposed to compete at Miss Universe 2021, while Clémence Botino, who had been crowned Miss France 2020, was supposed to compete in Miss Universe 2020. A switch was made between the two delegates due to a potential date conflict between Miss Universe 2021 and Miss France 2022, at which Petit was contractually obligated to be present.[16] Debbie Aflalo, originally the first runner-up of Miss Dominican Republic 2021, was appointed to represent the country after the original winner, Andreína Martínez, tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before her scheduled departure.[17] Kawtar Benhalima, originally the first runner-up of Miss Universe Morocco 2021, was appointed to represent the country after the original winner, Fatima-Zahra Khayat, was injured in an accident.[18]

The 2021 edition saw the debut of Bahrain and the return of Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Sweden, and Turkey; Morocco last competed in 1978, which makes the country's first time to compete after four decades of withdrawing from Miss Universe,[19] Greece, Guatemala, and Hungary last competed in 2018, while the others last competed in 2019. Barbados, Belize, Indonesia, and Malaysia withdrew from the competition due to travel restrictions while Myanmar and Uruguay also withdrew for undisclosed reasons.[20][21][22][23] The debut of the United Arab Emirates was also expected, but these plans were changed following the cancellation of its national pageant.[24][25]

Botino later tested positive for COVID-19 upon arriving in Israel, and was taken to a government isolation hotel. She had been fully vaccinated, and had been tested upon departure.[26] She was released from quarantine after ten days and was authorized to rejoin the competition.[27]

Notes[edit]

  1. The event was televised live at 02:00 Israel Standard Time (UTC+02:00).
  2. Andrea Meza's reign would be the shortest to complete her reign. Oxana Fedorova, the original winner of Miss Universe 2002, remains the shortest reign in the organization's history but was soon dethroned to pass the title to the first runner-up.
