Mita Banerjee

Mita Banerjee (Bengali: মিতা ব্যানার্জী) is an Indian lawyer, social activist, and animal rights activist.[1][2]
Early life
Mita Banerjee was born on 21 December 1982 in Kolkata, India. She attended Kamala Chatterjee School in Kolkata. After completing her bachelor's degree, she earned her law degree at Utkal University, India.
Legal career
Banerjee filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court against author Arundhati Roy. The case stemmed from an interview shared by Roy on her social media account (formerly Twitter, now known as X), in which she allegedly referred to India as a "Hindu fascist enterprise”.[3] Mita Banerjee argued that the statement was anti-national and hurtful to the sentiments of the Hindu community. The petition called for legal scrutiny of Roy’s remarks, citing them as provocative and disrespectful to India’s cultural and constitutional framework. The case received media attention and stirred national debate on the balance between freedom of expression and cultural sensitivity.[3]

Mita Banerjee was the first female attorney to be invited by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to deliver a lecture on legal rights in Bastar, a region heavily affected by the Naxalite insurgency.[4] The CRPF subsequently awarded her for her service.
In 2023, Mita Banerjee was named one of the “10 Most Influential Indian Personalities on the Forefront of Progress” by Business Standard.[5] She has represented India in the United Nations General Assemblies which took place in Thailand, New Delhi, and Malaysia.[6] In 2025, Mita Banerjee was nominated for the Padmashri in the field of Social Work, Law & Human Rights.
