Moharram Ali Khodai (Persian: محرم علی خدایی‎; born 20 August 1957 in Tehran) is an Iranian tennis player living in California. He is a tennis instructor in the United States.[1][2]

Tennis career[edit]

He became acquainted with tennis ball at the age of 4 and started training at the age of 8 on the tennis courts of Amjadieh Stadium in Tehran. He started his first competition at the age of 8 and became the champion of Iran for under-12 years old group, and then in the following years he won the championship of Iran for under-14 years old group, as well as for the under-16 years old and under-18 years old groups and he was the national champion for a total of 13 consecutive years. Moharram Ali Khodai became a member of the Iranian national tennis team at the age of 17 and was a member of the Iran Davis Cup team for 13 years and captain of the national team for several years.[3] He has been a member of Enqelab Tehran Club, Oqab Tehran and Foolad Khuzestan Clubs and has also been a champion of the Armed Forces with the Air Force team for two years.[3]

In December 2004, Alireza Khoroshi, the head of the federation of tennis in Iran at that time, appointed Moharram Khodai as the technical director of Iran's basic tennis teams.[4] He was then appointed coach of the senior national team by the Tennis Federation in April 2006. His brother Issa Khodai was also selected as the head coach of the senior national team.[5][6][7] Khodai also became the head coach of the Iran Davis Cup team in 2009.[3] He was nominated by the secretary of the Tennis Federation in November 2014 and elected as the representative of the coaches to participate in the meeting of the Electoral Assembly of the Tennis Federation to appoint the president of the federation.[8]

Records before the revolution[edit]

At the age of 18, Khodai won the Asian Championship for Under-18 Doubles group along with Mansour Bahrami in the seventh round of the Asian Youth Tennis Championships.[9] He won players from Romania, Netherlands and France, along with the former Czechoslovakia team,[10] and became world finalists for the group under the age of 21 in the Galia Cup with Ali Madani and Mansour Bahrami.[11] He was also among the top eight in the singles section of the Orange Bowl tournament in the United States in 1975. Moharram Khodai won third place at the Asian Championships in Osaka, and won the Over-45 Championship in 2003 at the Senior Tour in Merano.[12][3] Khodai participated in five Davis Cups in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 1993 and recorded a total of 9 wins and 6 losses in his record, of which 7 wins and 6 losses in the singles section and 2 victories in the doubles section.[13][14] [15] [16]

Playing style[edit]

Moharram Khodai is the first Iranian tennis player to play backhands with both hands, and his technique is very similar to the techniques of modern tennis players. At Tehran International Tournament in 1977, he perfomed an interesting performance and a beautiful game against Mike Fishbach, an American tennis player who played with a spaghetti double-breasted racket, and presented an interesting game that was acclaimed at the time.[3][15][16][17][18]

Working in United States[edit]

Khodai has established a tennis academy in Irvine, California, and is training people who are interested in this sport.[1][2]
