MOIRA is an American band formed in Dayton, OH in August 2014. The band consists of Alicia Grodecki (vocals, Rhodes, synth), Aaron Hardy (bass, synth, samples), and Patrick Bertram Hague (drums, samples).

History

After Vanity Theft disbanded in August 2013, Alicia Grodecki spent the following year writing and demoing new material, which served as a major departure from her previous projects.[1][2] She eventually enlisted her longtime friends Aaron Hardy and Patrick Bertram Hague to produce beats and assist in arranging her demos into fully formed songs. In August 2014, they decided to turn the project into a full-time band and began writing as a trio.[3] The name MOIRA is in reference to the character of the same name from the novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.[4]

The band spent nearly eight months writing and demoing songs, and in March 2015 they began recording with John Lakes of Mouth of the Architect in the basement of BHA Piano in downtown Dayton.[5] They produced a collection of five songs mastered by Kim Rosen, and after playing a small batch of regional summer shows they released their debut EP Asleep/Repeat/Awake in October 2015.[6][7]

From October 2015 to July 2016, the band toured extensively across the Midwest and Southeast.[8][9] During this time, they shared the stage with The Peach Kings,[10] Wildhoney, Warren Harrison of Hungry Lucy,[11] Jess Lamb of American Idol,[12] R. Ring,[13] Ringo Deathstarr,[14] Saintseneca,[15] and Lily & Madeleine.[16] While touring, the band also gained the attention of Real Art, who enlisted them to write and produce the score for the HTC Vive game Anomalie.[17] Grodecki provided the voice of the AI technology within the game. Anomalie premiered in conjunction with the virtual reality simulator Moveo at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2016.[18][19]

On May 14, 2016, the band opened for Mouth of the Architect in support of their fifth full-length album, Path of Eight.[20] Following this show, Hague amicably departed from the band for undisclosed reasons. Grodecki and Hardy continued as a two-piece,[21] and over the course of summer 2016 the band focused on reworking their songs to better suit the two-piece dynamic. In October 2016, they accompanied Mad Anthony on a small Midwestern tour.[22][23]

In January 2017, the band announced via Facebook that they would be performing alongside Mungbean for a string of regional dates, followed by an extended break to work on a new album.[24] On March 15, 2017, the band premiered a music video for the song "Machines" via New Noise Magazine.[25] The video was directed by former bandmate, Hague. On May 3, 2017, the band announced regional summer tour dates via Facebook,[26] and on May 9, 2017, they performed in Columbus with Hague on drums for the first time since his departure a year prior.[27]

On August 4, 2017, the band posted a summer tour video that contained a snippet of an unreleased song.[28]
