Monirul Alam (born 16 May, 1975) is a Bangladeshi photojournalist, documentary filmmaker, lecturer. Currently he is the visual journalist of European Pressphoto Agency. Before that he worked with Prothom Alo as deputy chief photojournalist.[1] He is the co‑founder of the Bangladesh Journalists for Investigative Media (BJIM). [2]
Early life and education
Alam was born in Old Dhaka in 16 May, 1975. He completed a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the National University, Bangladesh. Inspired by photography, he began practicing the craft in 1994. He then enrolled at Pathshala – the South Asian Institute of Photography, where he received professional training in photojournalism. Later, he earned a postgraduate certificate in Broadcast and Cross‑Media Journalism from BRAC University in collaboration with Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands. [3]
Career
Alam worked as deputy chief photojournalist at The Daily Prothom Alo before joining the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) as its official Bangladesh photographer. [4]
His work has appeared in The Guardian, Time Magazine, The Washington Post, The Telegraph, Chicago Tribune, Al Jazeera, NY Times Lens Blog, Newsweek, MSNBC, National Geographic Your Shot, France 24, Animal Planet, and The Daily Prothom Alo.[5]
Alam's photographic work often focuses on social justice, urban life, human stories and visual reportage in Bangladesh. He has been featured in photo‑essay platforms and has produced several long‑term visual storytelling projects. His blog and portfolio include series such as coverage on Bangabazar fire aftermath, Rohingya exodus, Rana Plaza disaster, protest movements, river life, and others. [6]
He frequently contributes photo stories to Private Photo Review and curates exhibitions on topics such as the history of photography in Khulna, contemporary visual media, and cultural memory via platforms like Drik gallery.[7]
Personal life
He is married to Hafizun Naher. The couple has two children.[citation needed]
