Monoblepharomycotina is a subphylum of fungi in the phylum Monoblepharomycota. It was introduced in 2018 as part of a high-level reclassification of the kingdom Fungi.[1]

Members of Monoblepharomycotina are part of the chytrid-like, early-diverging fungal lineages. They are generally aquatic or associated with wet habitats and include fungi with filamentous thalli, motile zoospores and oogamous sexual reproduction in some groups.[1]

Taxonomy

Monoblepharomycotina was described by Tedersoo and colleagues in 2018, with Index Fungorum registration identifier 554034.[1] In that classification, it was placed in the phylum Monoblepharomycota within the subkingdom Chytridiomyceta.[1]

The original 2018 classification listed three classes in Monoblepharomycotina: Monoblepharidomycetes, Hyaloraphidiomycetes and Sanchytriomycetes.[1] A later review of fungal classes and phyla stated that Monoblepharomycota currently comprises two classes, Monoblepharidomycetes and Hyaloraphidiomycetes.[2]

Description

Tedersoo et al. described Monoblepharomycotina as having a hyphal thallus with vacuolated cytoplasm, producing terminal sporangia and filamentous structures with a basal holdfast or rhizoidal system.[1] Asexual reproduction may occur by zoospores or autospores, and zoospores are described as elongate and tapered toward the anterior end.[1]

Sexual reproduction in the group is oogamous, involving female reproductive structures and motile male gametes in those taxa where sexual reproduction is known.[1]

Ecology

Species associated with Monoblepharomycotina are mostly aquatic or occur in moist environments. Some are saprobic, while others are associated with algae or other hosts.[1] Their biology links them to broader ecological roles of chytrid-like fungi in aquatic decomposition, parasitism and nutrient cycling.

Classes

Classes associated with Monoblepharomycotina include:

  • Monoblepharidomycetes
  • Hyaloraphidiomycetes

The class Sanchytriomycetes was included in the original 2018 treatment of Monoblepharomycotina, but later high-level summaries have not always retained it within Monoblepharomycota.[1][2]
