Monsta FTP is a web-based FTP and SFTP client, written in PHP and Javascript, as an alternative to traditional desktop clients such as Filezilla and WinSCP. [1]

    History[edit]

Monsta FTP was originally developed as an open source application in 2013 [2] [3], but was commercialized when version 2.0 was introduced, using the freemium model. [4]

The last open source version, 1.8, is still available for download and use. [5]

Its developer, Monsta Limited, is based in New Zealand. [6]

    Features[edit]

Standard FTP functions such as cut, copy, rename, delete, and CHMOD are available in all versions [7]. Files and folders can be uploaded via drag-and-drop from the user's desktop, and downloads are either single file, or multiple files/folders via a zip archive. [8]

A paid version is available which includes additional features including on-screen file editing, customization of the interface, and rebranding. [9] [10]

    Usage[edit]

The application files must be stored on the user's own server, and can then be accessed via a URL to connect to their own server, or any external server (provided the server administrator allows it.) [11]

    Integration[edit]

Monsta FTP is available directly from its website as a download [12], and is also available as an auto-install within cPanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin via Softaculous [13] and Fantastico.[14]

    Requirements[edit]

Monsta FTP runs on a standard PHP install, with a minimum requirement of 5.2. [15] Its licensing system requires OpenSSL support. [16]

    Vulnerabilities[edit]

Two significant vulnerabilities were identified in version v1.x where cross-site scripting could be used to steal other users' sessions [17], and include local files, outside of the install, to obtain sensitive data. [18]
