Monster Factory is a web series hosted by Griffin McElroy & Justin McElroy, in which they use games that feature character creation to make bizarre, often grotesque characters, and develop narratives around them. The duo occasionally use console commands, mods or external editors in pursuit of monstrous characters, with "no middle sliders" as a common rule employed.[1][2] The show airs with no fixed schedule.[3]
History
Griffin & Justin McElroy have co-hosted comedy podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me together since 2010, along with their brother Travis McElroy, and co-founded video game website Polygon in 2012. The first episode of Monster Factory was released in 2015, with the duo creating their interpretation of Squirtle using Dark Souls 2.[4]
In November 2015, the first episode of their Fallout 4 playthrough was released, in which they created "Final Pam", a strange and violent character.[5] Pam in particular was well received, and this led to a "trilogy" of episodes, in which the character was "at war with the very framework of the software that contains her".[6][7] For the release of Fallout 76 in 2018, Bethesda included an Easter egg location which acknowledges Final Pam. A house is present in the game's incarnation of Camden Park, bearing "PAM" spelled out with blocks, a radroach in a top hat, a coffee can in a child's crib and a broken Mister Handy in reference to various gags from the web series.[8][9] A 2019 episode of the series saw the McElroys create the character "Slimeburger Jr." in Fallout 76 to visit the house.[10]
The brothers both left Polygon in 2018, and announced that the show would continue independently. It is now distributed through the McElroy Family YouTube channel.[11][3]
Reception
Critical reception of the series has been positive. The Mary Sue described the show in 2016 as "the funniest series on YouTube", adding that it evoked "ab sculpting, tear-jerking, breath-robbing, wake-your-neighbours-up-at-3am laughter that leaves you feeling like you actually might die".[2] Destructoid described it as "true comedy gold" in 2018, identifying the Final Pam episodes as a favourite.[7] Observer indicated that there was "genius stupidity at work here", which resulted in a "joyous final product".[3]
