Montfort Higher Secondary School, Champaknagar is a Catholic boarding, co-educational school in West Tripura district of Tripura state in India. It is situated near Belbari. It is a Central Board of Secondary Education affiliated missionary school.[1] The school offers courses from nursery till the 12th standard.

History[edit]

The school was established in 1993 and is a part of Brothers of St.Gabriel, St. Louis Grignion of Montfort. This school is administered and monitored by the ‘Institute of the Brothers of St. Gabriel, Province of Northeast India’, popularly known as Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel.[2] The brothers oversee over 160 educational establishments in 21 Indian states. The Brothers manage 17 educational centres in five states in Northeast India.

The Montfort Brothers' Province of South India purchased some land in Belbari, near Champaknagar, in 1990, at the initiative of the Holy Cross Fathers and at the invitation of Bishop of Silchar, Rt. Rev. Denzil D'Souza. Bro. Varghese Mandapathil was appointed to the Tripura Mission by the then Provincial Superior, Bro. Antony of Padua. The Brothers took over the administration of the Holy Cross School at Moharpara with the understanding that the school would be relocated to the new site in Belbari, 30 kilometres away, as soon as the school building was completed.

On October 2, 1991, Rev. Bro. Lawrence Joseph, the then-Vicar General, lay the foundation stone for the new edifice. Under the capable guidance of Rev. Bro. Martin, the construction advanced gradually under hard conditions of social discontent and militancy. The school was relocated to Belbari, Champaknagar, in June 1993.

The school began its service to humanity as Montfort School on June 21, 1993, under the guidance of Bro. Varghese Mandapathil, the first Principal and Director. It started small, with 129 pupils from Kindergarten through Class V and 11 staff members. Mr. Romesh Bhandari, the then Governor of Tripura, presided over the inauguration of the new school building and the first Parents' Day on March 20, 1994. At the time, the school had a total enrollment of 220 students, with 120 boarders. On the same day, the foundation stone for the Boarding was set.

Bro. P. K. James served as Director and Principal from 1994 to 2000. During his six years of animation and leadership, the school and boarding grew into a full-fledged educational center. With the approval of the surrounding community, the school's location was renamed 'Montfort Nagar' in 1995.

In 1996, the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians began working with the Brothers on their mission.

In 2004, the school was named the best in Tripura for computer literacy, and the award was awarded by His Excellency, the then-President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Bro. P. J. Philip was appointed Principal and Director in 2007. At the time, the school was affiliated with the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE). He introduced Kokborok as a second language in the school as an alternative to Bengali.

Bro. Philip was very interested in changing the school affiliation from TBSE to CBSE. From April 1, 2012, this institution was affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. After becoming connected with CBSE, the first batch of CBSE candidates from Classes X and XII took the AISSC Exam in March 2014.
