Moonfire Ventures
Moonfire Ventures is a London-based venture capital firm that invests in early-stage technology companies, primarily in Europe.[1][2] The firm focuses on sectors including financial technology, gaming, health and wellbeing, and the future of work, and describes itself as a quantitative, data‑driven investor that uses proprietary artificial‑intelligence tools across the venture capital value chain.[3][4]
History
Moonfire Ventures was launched in 2020 by venture capitalist Mattias Ljungman, previously a co‑founder of European venture firm Atomico.[5][6]
In 2021 the firm closed its first institutional vehicle, a seed‑stage fund of around US$60 million referred to as Fund I.[7]
In May 2023 Moonfire announced a second fund of about US$115 million (approximately €106 million), together with an additional US$25 million opportunity fund, to continue backing early‑stage European startups using its AI‑driven sourcing and evaluation platform.[8][9]
Investment strategy
Moonfire invests mainly at pre‑seed and seed stage, with occasional participation in Series A rounds, and focuses on technology‑driven businesses.[10][11] The firm targets sectors such as the future of work, capital and finance (including Web3 and decentralised finance), gaming and online communities, and health and wellbeing.[12]
Moonfire reports that it uses proprietary machine‑learning models and a custom technology stack to identify and evaluate large numbers of startups each week, positioning itself as a quantitative or “data‑driven” venture fund.[13][14]
Portfolio
Press coverage of Moonfire’s funds has highlighted portfolio companies including UK fintech LiveFlow, HR software company Humaans, analytics platform Lightdash and football video game studio GOALS.[15][16]
