Morgan Sea

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Morgan Sea is a multidisciplinary artist from Saskatchewan.[1] Primarily known as a cartoonist and zine illustrator, Sea also works in video, performance art, craft/sculpture, video games and radio production.[2][3] Sea's work has been described as auto-ethno-graphic, exploring and creating trans feminist mythologies using fantasy and queer theory.[4][5] As a cartoonist, she draws from traditional themes of superheroes and monsters, often subverting their tropes by bringing them into banal, everyday circumstances.[6]

Early life and education[edit]

Sea was born and raised in Saskatchewan. She attended the Media Art program at Alberta College of Art + Design and Inter-Media Cyber Arts at Concordia University.[2] Sea completed a Interdisciplinary Master's in Art, Media and Design (MA, MDes and MFA) in 2020 at OCAD University.[5]

Creative practice & selected works[edit]

Sea's practice uses DIY strategies as a way to foster a more "tangible and flexible trans* culture," creating works that circulate online and are available cheaply in zine fairs.

Zines[edit]

Sea's zines range from the personal/autobiographical, to zines explaining how to make zines and about zine culture. Sea often uses fantasy as a way to comment on reality.

Zine Fair Lady (2015)[edit]

Developed using Twine in 2015 during a Pixelles game incubator Zine Fair Lady is a video game in the form of an interactive online zine in which the main character moves through a queer zine fair. Built in a choose your own story structure the work focuses on the microaggressions trans women regularly face.[7][8][9]

Abominatrix (2017)[edit]

Abominatrix is a 14-page comic that was included in We're Still Here (an all-trans comics anthology) edited by Tara Madison Avery and Jeanne Thornton.[10]

Tranzister Radio (2014-2017)[edit]

Over the course of 3 years Morgan Sea hosted and produced the Trans 4 Trans radio show Tranzister Radio on CKUT 90.3FM with a rotating group of trans creators. Focusing on arts and activism the show ran 40 episodes and hosted individuals such as Jordan Hope Miller, Lucas Charlie Rose, Rae Dooley, Raoule Nadeau, Kai Cheng Thom, Betty Iglesias, Gabrielle Bouchard, Kama La Mackerel.[2][11][1][12][3]

CBC Arts logo (2018)[edit]

In 2018 Sea was invited by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to create a CBC Arts logo in honour of Transgender Day of Remembrance.[12]

#silence=violence (2017)[edit]

In 2017 Morgan Sea alongside Allyson Mitchell, Deirdre Logue, Heidi Cho and Mandi Gray exhibited a large-scale collaborative mural that was created to commemorate the activists and activism that led to the University of Toronto's Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment.[3]
