Mother Ports
Mother ports[1][2] are a special category of ports that can handle very large cargo ships, including ultra large container ships and ultra large tankers. These kinds of ports are often become transshipment hubs and act as intermediate points of exchange of containers. Most of these types of ports are automated due to huge cargo volumes being swapped.
Background
In the early 21st century, the sizes of ultra large containerships expanded rapidly from 10,000 TEU capacity to 24,000 TEU ships. These types of ships are known as motherships.[3]
