History[edit]
Mr. Wuf has been the mascot of NC State athletics since 1965.[1] Ms. Wuf was created in 1975 to represent the NC State women's teams, the year after the Wolfpack added the women's basketball program. The two were named in 1981, when a student wearing Mr. Wuf’s costume tried to get “Mr. Wolf” embroidered on the back of his jersey. “Mr. Wolf” couldn’t fit on the jersey, so it was changed to the shorter "Mr. Wuf".[2] The couple was married during halftime of the NC State-Wake Forest basketball game on February 28, 1981. Chancellor Joab Thomas walked Ms. Wuf down the aisle and Wake Forest’s mascot, the Demon Deacon, performed the ceremony.[3]
Live Mascots[edit]
The NC State Wolfpack has had numerous live mascots over the years, including:
- Lobo I and II, grey wolves
- Lobo III, a coyote[4]
- Tuffy I, II, and III, Tamaskan dogs
