San Antonio Ski Hut

Location[edit]

The San Antonio Ski Hut (also commonly referred to as the Baldy Ski Hut) is located at the 8189-foot-level of Mt. San Antonio in the San Gabriel Mountains of California and is reached via a steep 2.6-mile trail from the trailhead at Manker Flat (6170’).[1] It is operated by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter[2] and is available for overnight use year-round on weekends. The hut also offers a convenient half-way stop for day hikers attempting the summit of Mt. San Antonio.[3]

History[edit]

The hut is located at the base of Baldy Bowl, recognized as a superb skiing area in the early 1930s. Impetus for construction of the hut came from Dr. Walter Mosauer,[4] a UCLA professor of Zoology, coach of the UCLA ski team, and ski mountaineering enthusiast,[5] and George Bauwens,[6] a USC professor of Engineering and pioneer ski mountaineer, who made the first ascent of Mt. Baldy on skis in 1922.[7] The Ski Mountaineers section of the Angeles Chapter, Sierra Club, formed in 1934,[8] was granted permission by the U.S. Forest Service to construct a hut in this location.[9] The hut was built by volunteers, who carried all of the building materials up on their backs; it was completed in January 1936. The hut burned to the ground on September 20, 1936, but was rebuilt (using burros to transport the building supplies),[10] with the replacement hut completed that winter.

The Hut Today[edit]

The rebuilt hut is preserved as much as possible in its original condition, except that the women’s dormitory has been converted to a tool and storage room, and the failing roof panels had to be replaced, again transported to the hut by human power. The hut has a fully-equipped kitchen, piped water, solar lighting, a wood-burning stove, dormitory loft beds for about sixteen visitors, and an outhouse with a view.[11]
