John Roberts (born 1984) is the CEO of Edapt, the alternative teachers' union[1].

Early life[edit]

He attended secondary school in Wigan, and attended Winstanley College.

Roberts enrolled to the Royal Marines at 18, and received a bursary to study physics and astronomy at the University of Sheffield from 2002 to 2005. He however did not complete his Royal Marines commission due to injury.[2]

Career[edit]

Roberts is an alumni of the Teach First programme (2007 cohort) and taught at George Tomlinson School. He was a science teacher and later served on the senior leadership team as director of standards.

In 2011, Roberts founded Edapt, alongside other teaching colleagues.[3]

He decided to set up the organisation after independent research showed 44% of teacher trade union members were not interested in taking any form of industrial action.[4]

Roberts has been cited as having been formally consulted by Michael Gove, and having a powerful influence on the general debate around education.[5]

Between 2016 to 2018 Roberts was trustee, and subsequently chair (2017), of the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust, which administers the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS).

In 2018, Roberts was elected as Vice President of the British Mountaineering Council.

Personal life[edit]

Roberts lives in Manchester. He is an active climber and mountaineer.
