Momtazuddin Ahmad (Bengali: মমতাজউদ্দীন আহমদ ইবনে মুহম্মদ জলীস ভূঁইয়া, Arabic: ممتاز الدين أحمد النواخالوي‎) was a Bengali Islamic scholar, author and professor of Hadith. He is the father of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Moudud Ahmed.

Biography[edit]

Momtazuddin Ahmad was born in 1307 AH (1889/1890) to a Bengali Muslim family of Bhuiyans in the village of Manikpur (Sirajpur union) in Companiganj thana, Noakhali, Bengal Presidency. His father was Muhammad Jalees Bhuiyan. After completing his primary education locally, he enrolled at the Calcutta Alia Madrasa in 1907 CE, passing from Jamat-e-Suwam in 1910 and Jamat-e-Ula in 1913. In 1916, he graduated in Hadith studies from the madrasa and awarded Fakhrul Muhadditheen. He passed his matriculation from the Calcutta Board in 1918. His teachers in Hadith under Mawlana Ishaq Burdwani and Mawlana Nazir Hasan Deobandi, and other sciences under Mawlana Abdul Haq Haqqani, Mawlana Lutfur Rahman Burdwani and Mawlana Fazl-e-Haq Rampuri.

Momtazuddin Ahmad then began his career as a teacher (modarres) at Calcutta Alia Madrasa in 1919. In 1921, he was temporarily appointed as a lecturer at the Presidency College. After that, he returned to Calcutta Alia Madrasa where he spent 34 years as a teacher before retiring in 1953, and settling in Dhaka.

He has a deep and wide knowledge of Hadith, and taught further Hadith studies to many students including Amimul Ehsan Barkati. He was very proficient in the Arabic language and has written many works:
