A A Munir Hasan (Bengali: মুনির হাসান; born 29 July 1966) is an Ashoka Fellow of 2008 and a Bangladeshi educator.[1] He is the general secretary of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee. In 2001, Hasan along with Professor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, Professor Muhammad Zafar IqbalMohammad Kaykobad and others started the Mathematical Olympiad movement in Bangladesh.[2] Hasan is a prominent figure in the field of technology policy advocacy and implementation in Bangladesh.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Munir Hasan was born in a small village in Chottogram, Bangladesh. His maternal grandfather, Dr. Abul Hashem is the first Muslim medical graduate from East Bengal. His paternal grandfather Moulvi Ahmed Chowdhury was an educator and published books on the English language and established a school for girls. Hasan attended the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka, where he studied electrical engineering.[4]

Munir Hasan is widely recognized for his significant contributions to organizing the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad and his instrumental role in shaping technology-related policies in the country.[6] His work encompasses policy drafting, facilitation of workshops and seminars, project management, and active participation in international forums. Hasan's commitment to youth engagement, education, and technological advancements has significantly impacted the ICT landscape in Bangladesh. One of his more notable initiatives was organizing the biggest ever scientific expedition in Bangladesh. Around 200 young enthusiasts were taken to Sundarban to observe the total solar eclipse in 1995. The findings were published in national dailies, journals, and in a British astronomical journal.[7]

Career[edit]

Munir Hasan is playing a key role in organizing the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad (BdMO) as the founder general secretary of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee. He played a significant role in The National Broadband Policy-2009. He actively involved in the formulation and implementation of ICT Policy-2009.[8] Munir Hasan was a consultant of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Government of Bangladesh for mathematics and science book development.[9] He supervised the education policy team and was a member of the editorial board responsible for the ICT Textbooks for Class VI-IX under the national curriculum. He also worked on the new curriculum in Mathematics for the school.[10]

Asoka Fellow 2008[edit]

In 2004, Munir initiated a teachers' movement, inspiring educators to collaborate with publishing houses to create improved textbooks.[11] The movement fostered a sense of responsibility and excitement among teachers, leading to workshops and the adoption of innovative instructional methods. By 2007, Munir's efforts reached 20% of the 10,000 schools, with regional mathematics festivals attracting 20,000 students. In 2008, Munir was honored as an Ashoka Fellow for his significant contribution to initiating and sustaining the Mathematical Olympiad in Bangladesh. Recognizing students' fears of math, he pioneered a pilot program in 2002 to create a positive environment for mathematics education.[12]
