Murder under investigation |
On April 18, 2021, Jaslyn Adams, a 7-year-old African-American girl, was shot and killed while accompanying her father Jonate Adams in his car at a McDonald's drive-thru by 2 unknown suspects during a shootout on Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois. Both Jaslyn and her father were shot, with Jonate surviving the shooting but being rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The shooting is currently under investigation by the Chicago Police Department. The murder gained international attention when information of the murder and the young age of the victim began to circulate on the Internet.[1][2][3]
Victims[edit]
Jaslyn Adams[edit]
Jaslyn Adams was a first-grader at a Chicago public school at Humboldt Park in Chicago. She was 7 years old when she was murdered.[4]
Jonate Adams[edit]
Jonate Adams is the 29-year-old father of Jaslyn. Jonate is a rapper, known by his stage name Tilla. His social media posts picture him with alleged gang members, firearms, interactions with his daughter and promotion of his own music.[5] He was admitted to Stroger Hospital in critical condition as a result of the shooting, but would later recover.[6]
Reactions[edit]
Vigil[edit]
A vigil attended by hundreds of people was held for Jaslyn and her father outside the Roosevelt Road McDonald's where the shooting occurred. Pink colored angel graffiti (Jaslyn’s favourite color) were written on the walls of the restaurant and balloons were released in the Homan Square neighborhood. The vigil was in partnership with McDonald's, as according to Adams family, was Jaslyn’s favourite restaurant.[7]
Family[edit]
The Adams family gathered outside the McDonald's where the shooting occurred to speak out about the murder and condemned gun violence in Chicago: “It’s about time we take a stand. We have to put down these guns,” said Lawanda McMullen, Adams grandmother. “It just don’t make no sense. A 7-year-old baby lost her life.” “I know that Jaslyn will not die in vain. This right here is the beginning of the change we need,” said Johnny Adams, Jaslyn Adams’ grandfather. “It’s time for a change. Change in our neighborhoods, our communities, our systems, everything needs to change. And it starts today.” Adams grandmother was called at the scene of the shooting and was told over the phone by Jonate “They shot my baby”.[8]
Politicians[edit]
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot made her official statement on the murder via Twitter: “I am heartbroken and angered that a 7-year-old child was killed this afternoon on Chicago's West Side. This unthinkable act of violence has no place here. The epidemic of gun violence cutting our children's lives short cannot go on.”
School officials and Unions[edit]
Chicago Teachers Union made an official statement of the murder also via Twitter: "Good morning, Chicago. There are children and staff at Cameron Elementary suffering from the devastating loss of a 7-year-old classmate today. It's pain that runs incredibly deep throughout the entire school community. Think of them, and pray for them."[4]
Chicago Public Schools CEO Janice Jackson said in a news conference, "The Jaslyn situation was particularly heartbreaking for me, because you know when I heard that she was going to McDonald's with her father I just thought about what that felt like to me as a kid. That was like always a big deal. You get to go to McDonald's and I get to do it with my dad. So I can only imagine the heartbreak ... I'm sick of our kids not feeling safe in the city, even doing something as normal, and, you know, just normal and regular."[4]
