Dylan Jacob Buckner (November 4, 2001 – January 7, 2021) was an 18-year-old American student at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois who died by suicide by jumping from a balcony at an Embassy Suites hotel in Deerfield, Illinois. According to his family, lockdowns and schools being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic were one of the key contributions into Buckner's decision to take his own life.[1]

Background and Suicide[edit]

In the Summer of 2020, Buckner would have been enjoying football camp as a senior at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] He attempted suicide in September 2020, according to his parents. They got him the help he needed, but his depression got worse as he was unable to go to classes in person, which is what caused him to take his own life.[3]

On January 7, 2021, police responded to a 911 call of a “long fall from a balcony” at an Embassy Suites hotel in Deerfield, Illinois.[4] Upon arrival, they found Buckner had traumatic injuries from the fall and pronounced him dead on the scene. At the time of his death, Buckner was a 12th grade student at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois.

Aftermath and Legacy[edit]

Buckner's parents had believed that if it was not for COVID-19 or there was a more effective way to respond to the virus, Dylan would not have taken his own life.[5]

Following Dylan's passing, his parents established the Dylan Buckner Foundation to honor him, and offered scholarships to graduating seniors from the school hoping to create more awareness about mental health concerns.[6]
