Music for Pleasure Music for Pain is the seventh studio album by the British band Space. Produced by bassist Phil Hartley, the band released the album on October 23, 2021, during a meet-and-greet event at Wax and Beans Records in Bury, Greater Manchester.[1] It was preceded by the lead single "Hell No", released as a digital download on August 27, 2021.[2]

Background[edit]

On Music for Pleasure Music for Pain, Space revisited the hip hop-inspired alternative rock style of their early work, and was the first to be recorded in frontman Tommy Scott's personal studio. Scott composed some of the songs on bass guitar, a technique he had previously explored on the band's debut album Spiders.[3]

Phil Hartley stated the album's emphasis on basslines and grooves were a reaction to their previous album Give Me Your Future, which was largely synthetic in nature, and that he started employing a greater use of effects pedals to flesh out the sound: "The band used to be a lot bigger; we’d have two keyboard players and two guitarists, so we had Moog bass and all the other top lines. Nowadays we have to find a way of getting all the sounds in there and amalgamating everything for the live set, hence the effects".[4]

The album features a collaboration with rapper Jorden Owoo, who provides lead vocals on "Bad Ass Hungry Pterodactyl".
