Musical Chair is a 2020 Malayalam drama film written and directed by Vipin Atley.[1] It won the NETPAC Award for Best Malayalam Film at the 2021 International Film Festival of Kerala.[2][3][4][5]

Plot

Martin, a 32-year-old writer from Kerala, lives in constant fear of dying. After losing his grandmother and father at a young age, he becomes anxious about his own health. Even though doctors assure him he is physically fine, Martin worries that he might die suddenly like his father, who passed away at 40. He becomes obsessed with medical tests and self-medicates in an attempt to ease his fears.[6] In his search for answers, he speaks with different people—including a doctor, a priest, an atheist, and others—who each share their thoughts on life and death. These conversations drive the story, offering both scientific and spiritual views on what it means to live.[7] The film’s title is a metaphor for life’s uncertainty, shown through scenes of children playing musical chairs on a beach. The story doesn’t follow a traditional structure but instead invites viewers to reflect on life, fear, and the human condition.[8]

Release

The movie was released directly on the OTT streaming platform Mainstream TV on 5 July 2020, making it one of the early Malayalam films to premiere on a digital-only platform during the COVID-19 pandemic.[9][10]

Reception

Cris from The News Minute praises the film for its intriguing theme and Vipin Atley's performance as Martin, a man battling his fear of death.[11]
