Mustela formosana, also known as the Taiwan mountain weasel,[1] belongs to the genus Mustela in the Mustelidae family.[2] This species is endemic to Taiwan. It was initially captured in 1969 in the Hehuan Mountain area during a research study on disease-carrying animal vectors conducted by the Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. However, it was mistakenly identified as a juvenile Mustela sibirica at that time (the specimen is currently housed in the National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung). It was not until 1997 that Professor Lin Liang-Kong from Donghai University rediscovered the species. After thorough comparison of its appearance, karyotype, and behavior, it was officially recognized as a new species.[3][4] They estimate that there are only about 100 left.[5]
Characteristics
Mustela formosana has a slender body, particularly in the head and neck region. It has a total length of 16~20 centimeters, with the tail accounting for about one-third of its total body length. Its appearance is similar to the Least weasel (Mustela nivalis) . The dorsal fur is dark brown with a slight yellowish tinge, while the abdomen is entirely white, extending from the throat and cheeks to the groin area. However, there are scattered brown hairs on the lower abdomen, creating small patches of off-white or brown coloration. Towards the tip of the tail, the presence of darker shades and intermingling black hairs significantly sets it apart from the widely recognized Siberian weasel (Mustela sibirica).[6][7]
Habitat
It is found in high-altitude areas, ranging from approximately 2500m to 3500m above sea level.[8] This includes regions such as Hehuan Mountain, Yushan, Tatajia, and Meifeng. Its preferred habitat consists of Taiwan red pine (Pinus taiwanensis) grassland with a lot of saplings and a sparse presence of arrow bamboo. There are no capture records of this species in grasslands formed after fire.[7][9][10]
