My Pretties is a novel by Jeff Strand.
Literary Elements[edit]
Plot[edit]
A serial kidnapper is preying upon women. He abducts them, then locks them in one of the cages dangling from the ceiling in a soundproofed basement. There, he sits quietly and just watches them, returning night after night, hoping he'll be in the room at the moment his beautiful captives finally starve to death.
Charlene and Gertie have become fast friends at the restaurant where they work. But Charlene is concerned when she hears how her co-worker spends her evenings: Gertie's cousin is one of the missing, and Gertie wanders the city streets where many of the abductions took place, using herself as bait with a high-voltage stun gun in her pocket. Charlene reluctantly offers to trail her in a car, just in case she does lure the kidnapper and things go wrong.
Unfortunately, the women find themselves the source of unwanted fame. And now they're on the radar of a very, very dangerous man...

Synopsis[edit]
Olivia is a struggling singer/songwriter who is hanging up her guitar. This is her last performance. When she's done she is approached by Greg, a manager who doesn't promise her much, but a little better than what she has now. Olivia is unsure, and Greg, accepting this, helps her into his car to drive her home as she passes out.
Meanwhile, Gertie has a new job as a waitress in an Italian restaurant. After dealing with a difficult customer, her coworker Charlene comes to her aid by "accidentally" spilling a plate of lasagna on the customer, sparking a friendship and a confession from Gertie. There's a predator out there snatching women up off the street and her cousin is one of the missing girls, so she puts on a wig and goes out at night as bait, searching for the kidnapper.
Charlene cannot allow Gertie to do this alone, so she offers to come with and check in on her to make sure she is safe. While doing this, Gertie sees a man and his son, out at midnight, and it seems strange. On investigation they match the description of a kidnapped child.
They call the police but before the cops arrive the man takes off on foot, boy in tow. Gertie and Charlene follow them and corner him in an alley, where he pulls a gun, threatening to kill the boy. Gertie is allowed to leave to hold off the cops. Charlene offers herself as a hostage to release the boy, which the man agrees to. Then, the man shoots himself.
Meanwhile, Olivia has woken up from her drugged sleep, hanging from a cage in a room with another conscious woman hanging next to her. Several other dead women are in cages throughout the room. Greg walks in, sits down and watches.
Ken is on his way home. Oddly, before walking inside he takes a swig of whiskey, splashes some in himself and tosses the bottle. Perfectly sober he walks in and pretends to have been at the bar drinking with his buddies.
His wife Vivian points out to him that while he was at the bar a news report came on showing a suicide in town, and that two women out to find the serial kidnapper were involved. This makes Ken interested, and he sets off to find these women.
When Ken reaches out to Charlene, she flat out refuses. Gertie accepts the bait and goes to meet Ken at a restaurant, thinking he's a YouTube filmmaker running a video on their heroic deeds. During dinner, Gertie steps away to use the restroom and Ken is able to pour a drug into her diet coke.
Gertie returns to the table, notices something is wrong, and doesn't touch her drink. She goes to her car and Ken attacks her, stuns her with her own stun gun and drives her to his lair.
Vivian catches Ken as he leaves.
