My Vampire System is a web serial by Jack Kawin Sherwin[1][2] (JKSManga[3]) self-published on Webnovel. My Vampire System is considered part of the LitRPG genre, mixing in-game like system elements in a fantasy world. The novel follows the teenage boy, Quinn Talen, in his struggle to survive in school as a freshly turned vampire, while being subjected to a lot of bullying and discrimination and trying to keep his new identity secret. The story encompasses his journey through life trying to protect those important to him while uncovering the secrets of both humans and vampires alike. The setting is a sci-fi world with post-apocalyptic elements.
With over 31 million views[4] and 5 million chapter sales[3] it is one of the most popular web novels on the internet. At the current time the series is still ongoing and has around 900 chapters, with an average publishing rate of 3 new chapters each day. It is ranked as the number one most popular novel in the all time category on the Webnovel website.[5] There is an ongoing comic adaptation of the novel from the team of Jack Sherwin accessible only to his supporters on Patreon.[6] It has 4 chapters to date, at a release rate of 2 chapters per month.[7]
Synopsis[edit]
After being turned into "Halfling" by an old book his parents left him, Quinn finds himself confronted with a myriad of problems, the first of which being that he now has to consume human blood to sustain himself. Furthermore, he now has a "system" in his head, that presents him with a multitude of videogame-like features, such as quests, an experience meter and more. This system also brings with it and artificial intelligence, which he can converse with via his thoughts, that provides him with information about his new species, and answers most of his questions (yet evades some or outright denies answers to him, stating he is not ready for them yet). In the first few chapters of this story, Quinn is taken to a military school and quickly learns that, even though he surprisingly does not know a single person attending it, he can by no means escape the ever present harassment and bullying for being weak. With time, however, Quinn is able get stronger and is eventually at the point where he could flip his situation and punish his oppressors. He decides to take the matter of the bullying problem into his own hands, after the teachers have continuously shown that they will not do anything against it, even going so far as to encourage it in certain instances. This proves challenging though, since he must keep the change in his species a secret as a consequence of the fact that, should his real identity be found out, he is highly likely to be taken away by scientists and/or powerful people in order to experiment with him. The solution to this problem goes hand in hand with the alleviation of another of his predicaments—his species being greatly weakened by any exposure to direct sunlight. That solution is the creation of a suit and a mask, which shield his entire body from the sun. He uses this suit to fight and defeat those oppressing others, and get stronger himself in the process.
As the story progresses, he is slowly introduced more and more to information regarding his own species. The arrival of another member of said species at his school marks the beginning of his journey to understand himself and his origins, as well as the entire vampire world as a whole. With time he is introduced to more and more knowledge as well as secrets both of the human and the vampire world. He finds that in order to be able to protect those important to him, he must get a lot stronger. In a semblance to the tale of Sisyphus, he finds that whenever he is close to being strong enough, he either attains new information or becomes involved in new conflicts that reveal that he still has a long way to go.
Official blurb[edit]
The human Race is at war with the Vicious Dalki and when they needed help more than ever, THEY started to come forward. Humans who had hidden in the shadows for hundreds of years, people with abilities. Some chose to share their knowledge to the rest of the world in hopes of winning the war, while others kept their abilities to themselves. Quinn had lost everything to the war, his home, his family and the only thing he had inherited was a crummy old book that he couldn’t even open. But when the book had finally opened, Quinn was granted a system and his whole life was turned around. He completed quest after quest and became more powerful, until one day the system gave him a quest he wasn’t sure he could complete.
"It is time to feed!"
"You must drink human blood within 24 hours"
"Your HP will continue to decrease until the task has been completed"[4]
Background[edit]
Quinn Talen
Quinn Talen is a constantly bullied and harassed outcast without any ability, and the main protagonist of the novel My Vampire System. He lives in a single bedroom apartment that had just enough space to fit a single bed, a mini-fridge and a desk. The room does have a TV, but Quinn merely lets it play as background noise and does not show any further interest in it. The apartment was provided to him by the government after his parents' passing, given the fact he has no living relatives and was still very young. He would only be occupying said apartment until he turned 16, however, since, like all other children, he was required to attend military school for two years following his 16th birthday. Said schools are located in their respective military bases, the location of which is kept a secret form the public, and equally from its students.
Quinn received no form of help or compensation following the death of his parents. The government took over his living expenses, but nothing more. Upon the loss of his parents at the age of 10, an agent appeared at his doorstep and handed him a heavy locked black book. He was told this was the only thing his parents possessed and had passed down to him. After trying all sorts of methods to unlock the seemingly indestructible and uncrackable book, some of his blood accidentally comes into contact with it. This—to his great surprise—unlocks and "activates" the book, turning him from a regular human teenager into something called a "Halfling" and granting him certain vampire powers, before evaporating into thin air, only a short time before his scheduled departure for the mandatory military school.
The Dalki
The reason for the two year attendance of military school being obligatory is that the human race is at war with an alien race called the "Dalki." They are battle-obsessed, powerful humanoid creatures that stand around 8-10 feet tall, slightly resemble dragons, are often covered in scales and have a varying amount of spikes on their backs, corresponding to their strength. The Dalki become stronger the more they get injured, and can grow additional spikes during battle, if injured sufficiently. They nearly succeeded in wiping out the human race, but were driven back by people with abilities, who quickly rose to the top of the completely changing human society. Dalki structures are made from the same black and incredibly sturdy material as vampire architecture, however, show less precision, as well as attention to detail and aesthetics. A number of years prior to the beginning of the story, the Dalki and Humanity have negotiated a ceasefire, but in the first few chapters of the novel it is described as uncertain, and tensions of a potential continuation of the war are growing.
Beasts
While the animals on earth have remained unchanged, the emergence of the Dalki has lead to the discovery of so-called beasts on other planets, mainly reachable via teleportation. They contain crystals known as "beast crystals" that can be sold for often large sums of money, or manufactured into a myriad of things, such as the very costly "beast armour." They can also be used as an energy source in a variety of implementations. A beast crystal is increasingly transparent corresponding to its tier. In ascending order the following are the different tiers:
- Basic Tier
- Intermediate Tier
- Advanced Tier
- King Tier
- Emperor Tier
- Legendary Tier
- Demigod Tier
- Demon Tier
At the date of writing, there exist two items created from the crystal of a demon tier beast. One of them is the sword of the supreme commander of the military, Oscar White. The other one is somewhat uncertain, given the fact that, according to Quinn's system's inspect function, they are merely at Demigod Tier. Oscar White, however, was convinced that the dual swords were a Demon Tier weapon when he fought against their wielder.
Abilities
In the world of this story, everyone has a certain amount of "Mutant Cells" (MC Cells) in their body. The amount of MC Cells one has determines the strength of one's ability. Everyone has/produces a certain amount of them, however the volume varies from person to person. Once someone learns an ability, their MC Cells change permanently, and they are unable to switch to another ability. This also means that it is impossible for one person to posses more than one ability (exceptions to this are if the ability itself allows the handling or use of other abilities; see Vorden Blade/Jack Truedream). While some abilities are considered stronger than others, there is no direct ranking associated with most of them (one exception to this would be the Greylash family ability, the lightning, being generally regarded as (one of) the strongest ability). There is, however, a direct strength ranking, as ability users are divided into power levels. These levels range from 1 to 8, and are determined by the amount of MC Cells the body produces. There is strong discrimination on the basis of these levels, and low-level users are generally destined to lead pitiful lives in which they are constantly harassed and exploited by those stronger than them. Overall there is a myriad of different abilities, and not all of them are known. So-called "Originals"—families that discovered their own ability—are very secretive and protective of their abilities, and go to great lengths to keep the details of their abilities hidden. They are also mainly on the stronger side. Furthermore the military has a monopoly over the earth element ability, and uses this to make the students at their schools without abilities dependent on them, by giving them access to the earth ability "for free," and requiring loyalty and service in exchange for the students to be able to progress with their ability beyond level 4.
