Korenovsky's killing[edit]

Missile attack aftermath

Korenovsky was a Ukrainian boxing coach, married with two children, who was killed by the Russian Armed Forces during the 2022–2023 Dnipro missile strikes.[1][2] His wife and children, who had gone for a walk just before the missile struck, survived the missile strike.[2] Korenovsky was the head coach of the boxing team for the Dnipropetrovsk region.[3] The Ukrainian Army stated that the strike was delivered from a X-22 Russian missile.[3] At the time of the attack, Ukraine lacked the capacity to shoot down X-22 missiles.[4]

44 others were killed in the same strike.[5]

Aftermath[edit]

A photograph, taken by Ukrainian photographer Yan Dobronosov,[5] of Korenovsky's bright yellow-painted kitchen, visible through the missing external wall of 9-storey[6] tower block that contained it, was shared widely on social media in January 2023.[1][7] Dobronosov used a drone to capture the image.[5] A video of the Korenovsky family celebrating a child's birthday in the same kitchen days before the airstrike was also widely circulated.[8]

The images provoked contemplation from politicians and social media users.[1] Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Zoya Yarosh wrote "Here people cooked, had kitchen conversations, celebrated holidays, laughed, argued...These are the wounds on the body of Ukraine. Wounds on our homes."[1]

Korenovsky was buried on January 17, 2023,[9] after a funeral outside the local Institute of Physical Education.[10]
